Rice and water
Do we still think in 2023 a bowl of rice will help a phone that went through the wash? It’s an iPhone X

We did a study, and rice was slower to work than just leaving the phone out on the counter. And neither worked fast enough. After about 48 hours in rice, only 13% of the water came out of the phone," he said.

Here’s the harsh truth about putting a wet phone in rice—it does absolutely nothing. Rice does not have magical moisture-wicking powers. You might as well just put the phone in a completely empty bowl.

Turn it off.
Leave it sit in a room temperature area with good airflow.
leave it for at least three days, week is better.
No, don't use rice, or anything else for that matter. Apple also mentions this in their support document(s).
No. We never thought it would. At least anyone who understands the science behind it never did…
I hope that he was savvy enough to turn on a daily iCloud backup, or rather not turn it off.
If it ever did dry out enough to start up it will remain a time bomb for complete failure.
iPhones from the Apple refurbished site are ok, those refurbed by Amazon, or any other seller refurbs are a big risk for fake parts.
This time it's my 87 yr-old dad, so I'm not going to be too hard on him. Something refurbished might have to be purchased. He uses a MacBook, an iWatch and iPhone. I hope I'm that savvy with technology when I'm his age. And of the mind to care!
I have iCloud turned on. I'm not a brain surgeon on this stuff, but I do know some basics. He tells me the phone appears totally operational. I've asked him to leave it flat for a while to let water evaporate rather than using it and moving it and the water around. I'm not sure he agrees. Thoughts?
Also, I'm glad for your feedback on the refurbished. I actually have my iPhone 7 and am thinking it is good enough for him. I only JUST got a new iPhone SE the other day to replace my 7 because I got out moded (just like with my 14 year old MacBook). They were so great. So maybe my well cared for 7 is better than a refurbished 14 for a person who is 87 and only using the basics and three or four apps. My biggest issue is how to manage his music and photos on the phone. They take up the most room. Your thoughts (if you have time)? re: the photos. he takes them all with his phone, but likes to look at them on his laptop. I have yet to figure out a way to get them to the laptop without everything loading back onto the phone. I think his would be the reason the 7 wouldn't work.
He will not be able to go from iphone X to iphone 7 easily if the X is on ios16
Brand new iphone 12 from Apple.com with same or bigger storage is the way to go, cheaper than refurb 14
Re the icloud backup
Settings, [your name], iCloud, iCloud backup should say On and then show the last successful backup.
Photo management is too big a subject for this thread.
Ya. Me, too. It's just that I had to ask from serious push back from others. It's not me who has made these mistakes with water over the years. Thanks for responding!
That's what I told him, but he had already turned it on and called me. We'll see what happens. Again, thanks for the continued ideas!
I would also add that if it doesn't power up since the wash incident it probably never will.
So helpful. Thank you.
You're very welcome
