FaceTime is not working on my iPhone 13 with iOS 16.3.1

Just updated to iOS 16.3.1 and now FaceTime won’t work. I can’t see or hear the other person and they cannot see me. My camera and mic are on, so is SharePlay and it’s on under cellular.

Hello ashly2122,

Thank you for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.

These steps may help you troubleshooting FaceTime issues:

"Use a fast connection to avoid sound quality issues with FaceTime

If your cellular connection or Wi-Fi network runs slowly, or other users stream audio or video on the same Wi-Fi network, you might have these issues:

  • Connection alerts or unable to connect
  • Choppy video calls
  • Black screen
  • Dropped calls

Make sure that both you and the person that you call use a fast Wi-Fi or cellular connection. If you use Wi-Fi, FaceTime requires a broadband connection.

If you still need help

If none of the above reasons apply to you, and you still can't make or receive FaceTime calls, follow these steps:

  1. Make sure that your device has a Wi-Fi connection to the internet or a cellular-data connection.Learn more if you're using router, firewall, or security software that restricts internet access.
  2. If you're trying to use FaceTime over cellular, make sure that Use Cellular Data is on for FaceTime. Go to Settings and tap Cellular or tap Mobile Data, then turn on FaceTime. If you're using an iPad, you might see Settings > Cellular Data.
  3. Go to Settings > FaceTime and make sure that FaceTime is on.
    • If you see "Waiting for Activation," turn FaceTime off and then on again. Learn what to do if you can't activate FaceTime.
    • If you don't see the FaceTime setting, make sure that Camera and FaceTime aren't off in Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Allowed Apps.
    • Make sure that you have the correct phone number or email address listed.

4.Go to Settings > General > Date & Time and turn on Set Automatically.

5.Restart your device.

6.Update your device to the latest version of iOS or iPadOS."

More details can be found here: If you can't make or receive a FaceTime call on your iPhone or iPad

If the issue persists, can you provide a few more details? Does this happen with multiple contacts or one specific contact? Also, does this happen on cellular data, Wi-Fi, or both?

Cheers!

I’ve been having the same issue as ashly2122 going on 3 weeks now.. Gone through all the steps suggested by Omar_A1 and the issue still persists. I then called Apple Support and sat on the phone with a manager for an hour while sharing my screen and went through all the same steps again… Even attempted to make/receive FaceTime video while sharing screen. Still no luck. Was advised to back up phone, erase everything/factory reset and set up as new device. The manager was very specific on not backing up phone from icloud and redownloading each app individually to try and see which app was causing FaceTime too not work. Also was advised to record my screen whilst attempting to make a FaceTime call and send it too them…

I haven’t came across anyone else being advised to factory reset phone nor the other steps I was suggested by the Apple Support Manager so I’m holding off for now. That’s a lot of additional time being spent trying to fix and diagnose an issue that should’ve already been fixed.

Apple needs to resign iOS 15.7 and 16.1 so consumers can choose to revert back too older software.

It would be nice to use FaceTime again instead of Google Meet, Snapchat or any other platform for video calls.

I’m still having this same issue on an off for a few months .. can FaceTime but can’t see or hear the other person , same problem on their side .. this needs to be fixed .. my iPhone 12 Pro Max works absolutely fine so I know it’s not a me problem . I just really hope this isn’t a ploy for us “older model” users to upgrade because that won’t be happening . This needs to be fixed ASAP . I’m sick of it .

Ever since my latest update on both phone and computer I can’t see or sometimes hear the other person when I am FaceTiming. They can see me. But I just see their letter of their contact. It has happened for the last two weeks and across contacts, Wifi, cellular. My husband and colleague having same issue. Also calls are dropping. I have had to move to zoom for meetings because it’s not working
