Black line on home screen

Does the line appear just on the Lock Screen of the iPhone, and just underneath the status icons in the upper-right? If that's the case then this would likely be the indicator of where to swipe down to reveal Control Center.

How to open and close Control Center

iPhone X and later

•To open Control Center, swipe down from the top-right corner of your screen. 

To close Control Center, swipe up from the bottom of the screen or tap the screen. 

If you swipe too close to the top-center of your screen, you might open Notification Center instead of Control Center.

Thank you for this clarification. We are not understanding what line you might be describing. We would recommend that you reach out and contact Apple Support. They will be able to work with out and figure out just what it is you are seeing and if necessary get it resolved.
