MacBook Air M2 Battery Drain Problem While in Sleep Mode

Hi everyone,

I have a problem with battery draining (at the rate that I think is not normal) while the Mac is put on sleep. So, from my observation so far, the battery will drain about 1% every two hours while in sleep mode. I usually only use my Mac for about 2-3 hours every day, and the rest of the time I put it on sleep mode. I consider it as not normal because of tow reasons: 1) because I personally think this rate of draining is not normal, since I don't have any background activities running or whatsoever, and 2) I've seen someone on this forum said that his Mac only loses 2%-3% battery in around 10 hours of sleep mode, which I think should be the reasonable draining. Right now I have latest software installed, which is Ventura 13.2.1.

Can anyone help me?

Thank you.

I have the same issue with both m1 / m2 MacBook Air, the only thing I find helping is to turn off wifi before I close the lid. With wifi off, I can leave the Mac off for many days with no drain of the battery. if I leave wifi on, the battery on the Mac will drain within 3 days...

IDK if you got your solution, but for my M2 Macbook pro 13" the culprit to massive battry drain while in sleep mode was Bluetooth. I use a bluetooth trackball and when you put it to sleep the bluetooth would constantly wake it and search for the device, which is a bug since it shouldn't do that in sleep. So, if I turned off Bluetooth before putting it to sleep that solved it for me.

to everyone having sleep problems...

try "Sleep Aid" App and in Settings

Disable Wifi during sleep + Disable Keep network alive...

FindMy - wont work but drain will end!

Sleep aid is Free for 14 days so you can test....

For test purpose close the lid and after 1hour come back and see how many sleeps you got without the settings enabled and as a start point maybe try it as it is before you disable...

Regards and let me know your results.

Thanks for reaching out again, halorobinjong. You may find help with the following article, as it can walk through some steps helping with issues pertaining to MacBook battery life: If your Mac battery runs out of charge quickly

If you're having issues with your MacBook battery running out of charge quicker than it should, these steps may help:

* Check your battery’s condition. The battery’s ability to hold a charge may be less than when it was new. See Check the condition of your Mac laptop’s battery.
* Change your settings. For example, dim the display, turn off Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, and set the display to turn off after a period of inactivity. See Save energy on your Mac.
* Turn on Low Power Mode. See Change Battery settings on a Mac laptop
* Quit apps that you aren’t using. Even an app you aren’t using may be working in the background and consuming energy.
* Disconnect any accessories that you aren’t using, such as external hard drives.
* Keep your software up to date. See the Apple Support article Update macOS on Mac.

Let us know if this helps.

Regards.

I am so fed up of contacting Apple specialists cuz they all said the same thing without any help at all. I was asked to check any significant energy consumption from Activity Monitor but they are all normal. My cycle count increase 1 every day with constant charging.
Have you had your issue resolved by Apple?

Have you, as suggested by the Community Specialist, contacted Apple directly using the provided Get Support link? If you don't want to do that then take your Mac into either an Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple Store nearest you. If needed here is link for you start your search:

Yes, I had always contacted Apple directly. I got appointment from them to go to physical store (twice) but the issue still remained the same. First they asked me to update my Mac, then the second time asked me to bring my Mac to store just to have the software reinstalled/restored.

I contacted again (always ended up having long conservation)- the latest time was in March and they asked me to check for any significant % CPU from Activity Monitor (like over 50%) which I don't see anything abnormal activity. I'm literally tired of reiterating my Mac's battery again and again to different people and have all different specialists told me all the steps the others had told me to do so.

So I ceased to contact Apple again because I don't see any progressiveness in contacting Apple specialists at all.

I bought my Mac in late August 2022 but now my battery health is 93% in January 2023 (the Apple specialist told me it is normal). Then I noticed that my Mac suddenly drained its battery so quick ( to the point I had to charge 2-3 times a day. Now it is 4-5 times a day). I was literally breaking down when I see no help at all when contacting Apple and see that it wasted my time, the chatting was not entirely responsive and sometimes . That's the reason I do not want to contact them again

Hi fatDannies,

I'm sorry for the late reply. I haven't had my issue resolved by Apple. I contacted Apple Support, but aside from the nice attitude of the advisor, I didn't feel the issue is resolved. Regarding my use case, the advisor told me to just shut down my Mac if not being used for the duration almost a day, and he mentioned that this is the official advice from Apple. So, I did that. Aside from that he just asked me to do the Apple Diagnostics.

The draining when the Mac is put to sleep overnight is still the same though. Apple Support didn't give useful information regarding this. I even don't know whether the draining is normal or not. But when being used normally, I think the draining is quite acceptable, and this is what makes me don't pay too much attention to this issue again.

I think your problem is much more severe, and I feel sorry for that. Hearing your story, I kinda feel hopeless that my issue could be resolved. Because even after visiting the Apple Store for many times, your issue still hasn't been resolved, so nothing to say for me who doesn't have an access to Apple directly through Apple Store (I don't even have direct access to authorized service center).

I hope your issue could be resolved well.

I had this problem for a while and I tried different software solutions (reset memory, close apps and so). I have a MBP 16" with I9. What I did which solved the problem: I watched a video about how to open the back plate of the computer (you need a special screwdriver) and I gently cleaned up the computer with a vacuum cleaner (with low power). This solved the problem for me.

Hello ryane77,

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately, again, those steps don't help, either because the steps have been implemented (like keeping the software up to date) or the steps are irrelevant to the problem (like dimming the display, while the problem is happening in sleep mode).

Then, let me ask in another way: is 1% battery drain every two hours while in sleep mode normal for M2 MacBook Air?
