Headphones have a clicking sound

PROBLEM:

This morning my M2 Mac Mini has developed a random clicking sound with my headphones (Bose Quiet Comfort 2).

It's rhythmic and seems to be a regular frequency, albeit it does change every now and then to a different frequency.

I have tried Youtube video, my own videos, and no sound playing, the clicking stays.

WHAT I HAVE TRIED

-Plugging my headphones into my phone and laptop - clicking is gone.

-Tried small cheap JVC earbuds, same clicking, albeit not nearly as frequent or for as long. Normally a few clicks at a time.

-Turned my Mac off/on

-Adjusting the volume

-Moving the Mac position

-Unplugging some cables

Nothing seems to stop or limit the clicking.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I listen to Binaural Beats for concentration and focus. Another tone being added in really messes with the output frequency and means it doesn't work :)

Hi,

It seems like you're experiencing a clicking sound on your headphones when connected to your M2 Mac Mini. Since you've already tried some troubleshooting steps, here are some additional suggestions:

  1. Update audio drivers: Check if there are any audio driver updates available for your Mac Mini. If there are updates available, install them and see if the clicking sound goes away.
  2. Check audio settings: Make sure that the audio settings on your Mac Mini are configured correctly. Check the sound output settings and see if there are any settings that could be causing the clicking sound. For example, make sure that the audio output is set to the correct device.
  3. Test with a different audio player: Try playing audio with a different audio player on your Mac Mini. This will help determine if the clicking sound is related to a specific application or if it's a system-wide issue.
  4. Disable Bluetooth: If you have any Bluetooth devices connected to your Mac Mini, try disconnecting them and see if the clicking sound goes away. Sometimes, Bluetooth interference can cause audio issues.
  5. Reset PRAM/NVRAM: Resetting the PRAM/NVRAM on your Mac Mini may help resolve the issue. To do this, shut down your Mac Mini, then press and hold the Command + Option + P + R keys while turning it back on. Hold these keys until you hear the startup sound twice, then release them.

If none of these steps help resolve the clicking sound, it may be a hardware issue with your Mac Mini's audio output. In that case, you may need to contact Apple support or take your Mac Mini to an authorized service provider for further assistance.

I hope this helps!

  1. How?
  2. All good
  3. Happens with Youtube, Quicktime and nothing playing
  4. unfortunately I only have a bluetooth mouse so that would be awkward once I disabled bluetooth, lol
  5. I will try this next time I shut it down tonight.

I would like to re-emphasize, it has no clicking for 5 - 10 mins and then it starts. Interference would happen straight away and not after 5 - 10 mins I would have thought. I can't see a scenario when it wouldn't.

When first plugging my headphones or cheap earbuds in, there is no clicking, but after approx 5-10 mins it starts.
