I try to transfer photos from my iPad Pro Save button is grey

ipad Pro 11 inch, version 16.3.1. When I plug in a external hard drive, usb connection using the apple adapter. The save button turns grey the moment I attempt to save to the drive using “save to files”. I can save the photo to files on the iPad but not to the external drive. I have dove this operation before with no issues. I can also see the photos on my external hard drive with no issues. This is inconvenient.

iPad mini, iOS 12

Are you experiencing the issue on multiple external storage devices?

As mentioned in the article below, "external hard drives often require an external power source when used with iPad. If an external hard drive doesn’t supply its own power, and your iPad has a USB-C or Thunderbolt / USB 4 connector, you can use a powered USB hub. If your iPad has a Lightning connector, you can use the Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter connected to a USB power adapter."
