Maps app continues to run after navigation is finished until battery is dead

With the latest iOS update, the maps application has started to completely drain my battery by running after I get to my destination. Unfortunately, Apple Support said that Maps running after navigation has ended and your phone is locked is "expected behavior," and I'll either need to restart my phone or force-quit Maps every time I use navigation from now on.

Since this behavior never happened before the latest update, this is obviously a bug, but one that won't get fixed since Apple doesn't accept that it is a bug.

I will have to add another option: switch to Google Maps. I would much rather continue with Apple Maps, but completely draining my battery twice a day is just not an option.

The intended use case for Apple Maps is:

  1. Get into the car.
  2. Connect the phone to the CarPlay. I use the wireless connection option.
  3. Enter the destination into the CarPlay Apple Maps app.
  4. Navigate to the destination.
  5. Click on the red End Route button on the CarPlay screen.
  6. Turn the car off and exit the vehicle.

Following the intended use case results in a dead battery about 90 minutes after disconnecting the phone as the Maps app continues running in the background. Yes, you can either force-quit Apple Maps on the phone itself or reboot the phone, but those are workarounds for an obvious malfunction.

It has done if for years as has Google Maps if you disconnect the car play cable while navigation is in progress.

Disconnect your phone, open it, go to the maps or Google maps and end the navigation, preferably force close the app.

Remember the app is designed to run with a locked phone so you can save battery on a long journey with standalone use. Same goes for music streaming etc.
