It is different. Some carriers offer that you can convert your physical SIM card to eSIM for free, some charge a small fee.
You can easily use your current number as an eSIM, but you must contact your carrier and find out your options. Not all Carriers offer eSIM. When your eSIM is created with your current number, your current physical SIM card will close.
