How do I remove an "extra" icon to open Messenger, or any other App, from my Imac toolbar?

I have two Messenger icons in my Imac toolbar and when in Launchpad. Only one Messenger App/account. I can get one icon to "jump" in the toolbar but it won't drag into Trash. How do I eliminate the extra icon? I have tried both with the app open and closed but haven't found the magic buttons. Thanks.
