messenger icon on my iMac dock

The messenger icon appears on my dock almost every day. I di not put it there or want it there. How do I prevent this annoyance from happening?

iMac 24″, macOS 13.3

Check at  > System Settings > General > Login Items. Make sure you don't have anything set to Open at Login.

Yes, Messenger was listed and turned on (there are lot in the same condition but none of the others find themselves to the dock). I turned Messenger off and today it did not appear on the dock. So, you suggestion appears to have worked - I will be sure if this continues for a few more days. thanks very much for you help!
