MacOs Safari Unable to Connect to Translation

Ventura 13.2.1, Safari 16.3

When attempting to translate webpages using the translate from German/Spanish to English I get an Unable to Connect to Translation error at the top of the web page.

This functionality has been working intermittently for a few months now. Some days it works just fine and others it won't work at all without any configuration/software changes. I have tried multiple websites that have worked successfully in the past and they randomly stop working. The smart bar recognizes the pages are in another language and offers the option to translate.

  • It works fine on iPhone and iPad but not on Macbook.
  • On page translation works but not the website translation (highlighting text and translating).

Testing:

  • Downloaded the languages and tried to do on-device translation
  • Disabled on device translation and retested
  • Rebooted and retested
  • Cleared cache and cookies and retested
  • Tested using incognito mode.

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 13.2

Hello n8rtot,

It sounds like you've completed some great isolation steps for the issue already. Regarding the feature the guide page here: Translate a webpage in Safari on Mac, does "The availability of translations and the number of languages that can be translated may vary by country or region."

With that said as the error mentions a connection issue, you can also test while booted to safe mode and in a new user account.

How to use safe mode on your Mac

Add a user or group on Mac

If you're able to test on a different network, ensure your router settings are the recommended ones listed here: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points - Apple Support

Reach out to Apple Support directly to report the issue and further assist if it continues.
