iMac not accessible in the network

I have two computer on the same wifi network. Same administrator user.

The first is an iMacPro (A).

The second a MacBook Pro (B).

In the finder of A, I can see the icon of B and I can access the home directory of the user on B.

I don't need to login because the user is the same and registared.

In the finder of B, I can see the icon of A and I need to login. Once logged, I can't access the home directory of the user on A. If I double click it the finder tries to connect for minutes and then an error tells me that the original item was not found.

It sounds like you are having some issues with File Sharing. To start, ensure that you are following the steps as intended, so we can be sure we are on the same page.


"Set up file sharing

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Settings, click General  in the sidebar, then click Sharing on the right. (You may need to scroll down.)
  2. Turn on File Sharing, then click the Info button  on the right.
  3. To select a specific folder to share, click the Add button  at the bottom of the Shared Folders list, locate the folder, select it, then click Add.
  4. The Public folder of each user with an account on your Mac is shared automatically. To prevent a folder from being shared, select it in the Shared Folders list and click the Remove button .
  5. Control-click the name of the folder, choose Advanced Options, select desired options, then click OK. 
  6. See Set advanced file sharing options.
  7. By default, any user set up on your Mac in Users & Groups settings can connect to your Mac over the network. A user with an administrator account can access your entire Mac.
  8. To give only specific users or groups access to a folder, select the folder in the Shared Folders list, click the Add button  at the bottom of the Users list, then do one of the following:
    • Add users or groups from all users of your Mac: Select Users & Groups in the list on the left, select one or more names in the list on the right, then click Select.
    • Add users or groups from everyone on your network: Select Network Users or Network Groups in the list on the left, select one or more names in the list on the right, then click Select.
    • Add someone from your contacts and create a sharing-only account for them: Select Contacts in the list on the left, select a name in the list on the right, click Select, create a password, then click Create Account.
  1. To specify the amount of access for a user, select the user in the Users list, click the pop-up menu next to the user name, then choose one of the following:
    • Read & Write: The user can see and copy files to and from the folder.
    • Read Only: The user can view the contents of the folder but can’t copy files to it.
    • Write Only (Drop Box): The user can copy files to the folder but can’t view its contents.
    • No Access: The user can’t see or copy files from the folder.
  1. Click Done." Set up file sharing on Mac


If you are following these steps, please restart your Mac. Restarting can often help resolve unexpected behaviors. Shut down or restart your Mac


Then, test safe mode to see if you can access File Sharing. This is a way of starting your Mac that prevents certain software from opening. Software that could be part of the issue. Please note, it does take longer than normal to start this way. How to use safe mode on your Mac

Dear JessS19, thank you for your answer and sorry for late reply.

All your suggestion dipict the state of the art of my IMacPro called A.

To this computer A is connected via Thunderbolt a Lacie HD.

My second computer (B) is logged with the same administrator user as A.

On B I see A on the Positions list in the Finder side bar.

I click on it.

The list of folder that I see now is:

  • the user mail folder
  • the Lacie HD
  • the Macintosh HD of A
  • a shared folder on Lacie.


The problem is that when I click on each of those folder, nothing happens (the wait symbol start turning) till after minutes an error message tells me that the original item was not found.


I can access computer B from A, so it's a one-way issue.

Since File Sharing should be working, you’ll still need to contact Apple Support again. They have the tools at hand to look further into this issue with you.


One thing we can recommend, is that you request a Senior Advisor when someone picks up your call. Also, if you were provided a case number, the Senior Advisor can read the notes left behind and pick up where you left off previously.
