What’s app says chat backup not found but iCloud showing it’s there.

I have been fiddling around with What’s App and Whats App Business…after putting in an Australian Sim while on holiday. Now am home all the data from one of them has disappeared - ‘backup not found’ although I cloud shows it’s still there.

App wants me to ‘skip’ forward in order to download app - apparently losing the chance of downloading the chat later?

so confused. Any ideas 🙏

Hey kp.hardeman,

If you are having trouble restoring an iCloud backup to WhatsApp, these articles from WhatsApp Help Center may be able to help.

"Restore your chat history from an iCloud backup

  1. Verify that an iCloud backup exists in WhatsApp > Settings > Chats > Chat Backup.
  2. If you can see when the last backup was performed, delete and reinstall WhatsApp.
  3. After verifying your phone number, follow the prompts to restore your chat history."

If you cannot restore an iCloud backup, this article may be able to help.

"If you're unable to restore an iCloud backup:

  • Verify you're attempting to restore data from the same phone number and iCloud account that the backup was created on.
  • If you’re restoring an end-to-end encrypted backup, you’re using the correct password or key.
  • Verify there's enough space on your iPhone to restore the backup. You need to have at least 2.05 times the space available in your iCloud account and on your phone than the actual size of your backup.
  • If the backup was created using iCloud Drive, you’ll only be able to restore that backup on an iPhone with iOS 12 or newer.
  • If you've turned on iCloud Drive for any device using your Apple ID, you won't be able to restore data on your iPhone unless it has iOS 12 or newer.
  • Attempt the restoration from a different network. Preferably the network you connect to the most.
  • Turn iCloud Drive off and back on. Go to iPhone Settings > tap your name > iCloud > turn iCloud Drive off and on.
  • Sign out of iCloud and restart your iPhone by turning it off and on. Then, sign back in to iCloud and try the restore again."

Thanks Mario - Whats App have sent me that printed sheet of ‘solutions’ several times.

It presupposes that you can actually OPEN your WhatsApp to get to the settings!

I live in one country and work in another and visited another and lost my backup when changing SIM cards in a multiSim phone.

…..whatsapp are as muddy and difficult to speak to as Facebook - it is a complex app but when it comes to problems at the interface between them and iCloud/Apple then they both just pass the buck. All I can say is NEVER assume you can trust iCloud and what’s app with years of vital info assuming backing up to the cloud will be sufficient - you can lose it all in a nanosecond - and no one cares.

It is NO help to bat me across to What’s App who have zero tech support other than online where you wait hours for some formulaic answer that doesn’t address the problem.

I have lost YEARS of info to an app the Apple has no right in promoting when it loses its customers vital info with no real tech backup to help retrieve it.

My info is still in the cloud that is why it IS Apple’s business.
