Missing photos in Photos Library/originals

I wanted to reduce the clutter in my photos, so I wanted to sort my library and delete the largest files. Yet, I have the problem that in the “originals”-folder in my Photo Library, there are almost no photos. At the same time, the “derivatives”-folder is enormous.

Can someone explain to me where my photos are located?

No.

The Photos "package" is carefully arranged so that the database can use the information to show your pictures properly. Messing around in there, even a little bit, can damage the database and make pictures unviewable and impossible to fix.

In Photos, picture sizes are shown in the Info Window (⌘-i).

You can use the app PowerPhotos ($30 or free demo) to make a list of the pictures in a Library that can be sorted by size. Here is a list I sorted by file name, for instance:

PowerPhotos is an app that has lots of functionality and that many of us use.

If you want to look for photos by size get the free version of PowerPhotos. It will let you use columns, one of them being file size, to show the photos in the library. You cn have it sorted by largest size on top (descending) so you can find and get the largest sizes easily.

PowerPhotos will also let you export and delete the photo from the library.

So do not try to do what you want to do from within the library's package. It will damage the library and make is practically unusable.
