MacBook Pro Won’t Connect to wifi

Hi, I have a MacBook Pro that won’t connect to the internet.

Its been like this for weeks now and I can’t for the life of me understand why.

I run the diagnostics and it says something about configuring the DNS and also the proxy.

Everything seems to look fine though, that said I’m not great with computers so I don’t know what numbers/information I need to insert in the DNS or Proxy tabs.

Can someone help me please, otherwise I’m left with a useless computer I’ve paid good money for.

I’ve only had it a couple of months too!

Again I’m useless with computers so can anyone who replies put it in ‘simple terms’ for me.

Thanks in advance.

Refer to the following..

Troubleshooting Mac Wi-Fi:

A few thoughts to try...

I. Clear the Temporary Internet Files:

II. Restart your Router:

  1. Power: off the router
  2. Wait: 30 seconds
  3. Power: It back on

III. Boot in Safe Mode:

In Safe ModeLogin Items do not run at login, certain preferences are set aside, and damaged system files are then reset. So, once booted in to Safe Mode, wait 30 seconds, and then boot up normally, attempting another update install. For instructions, go here: How to Use safe Mode on your Mac - Apple Support

IV. Try a New Admin User:

What happens when you create a new administrator user, and log into it? Do you still get this error? If not, then it is likely an error with the current user. If so, then it is likely an error with your Mac.

Hi PNEFOREVER2,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We understand that you're having an issue with your MacBook Pro connecting to Wi-Fi. We'd like to help.

Let's have you follow these steps to see if you can get this connected to your network. If your Mac isn't connecting to the internet over Wi-Fi - Apple Support

The article above will walk you through a few different steps to work on getting this resolved. Make sure to follow the links within the article if you have issues with one step or another. Before you finish the steps, make sure that you try another network as well because that can help confirm if this issue is related to your MacBook Pro or your current network.

Let us know the results and we'll continue to help from there.

Cheers!

if you have a green light and connected, try this:

open browser and type:

1.1.1.1 and press return.

If you get the CloudFlare** splash page, your remaining issues and Domain Name Server (DNS) issues. DNS Servers look up names into Internet Phone Numbers, and you need to have one that does the job.

**CloudFlare is NOT part of the solution, they just have the easiest-to-remember all-numeric (needs no DNS lookup) IP address on the Internet, and they answer with something recognizable.

then either:

Your ISP is not actually providing any service (extremely unlikely)

or you have something installed that is interfering with your internet connection

To check of the latter, please download and run this little "discovery" utility, and follow the instructions to post its pre-laundered report back to a reply on the forums:

on an Apple silicon Mac, this is the recommended procedure:

Start up your Mac with Apple silicon in safe mode

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > Shut Down.
  2. Wait for your Mac to shut down completely. A Mac is completely shut down when the screen is black and any lights (including in the Touch Bar) are off.
  3. Press and hold the power button on your Mac until “Loading startup options” appears.
  4. Select a volume.
  5. Press and hold the Shift key, then click Continue in Safe Mode.
  6. The computer restarts automatically. When the login window appears, you should see “Safe Boot” in the menu bar.

1. Boot into Safe Mode:

[hold down shift upon boot until the login screen appears]. See if this is still an issue. Safe Mode lets items run as default, without changes whatsoever. That is possible because caches of your macOS are temporarily disabled while in Safe Mode

2. Clear your Temporary Internet Files (Cookies & Cache) of Safari:

When you connect to the Internet through a Router you control, your 'strictly-local' IP address (from a set of addresses reserved for this purpose) are NOT sent onto the Internet.

ranges include:

192.168.xxx.yyy

10.xxx.yyy.zzz

172.16-31.xxx.yyy

Instead, your Router 'acts as your agent' in dealing with the Internet, and uses its own ISP-provided IP address to send. Any unsolicited queries from the Internet are discarded. this firewall, implicitly built into every Router, is called Network Address Translation, or sometimes network address translation firewall. Your router may have an additional state-wise Firewall built in.

Because Your Router is already protecting you from arbitrary communications from the Internet, it is considered unnecessary to have the firewall active on your Mac, as long as you are behind a Router you control. If you want to enable your computer's firewall in a public place, that is up to you.

Please disable any and all firewalls, VPNs, or other so-called 'protection' you may have activated or added to your computer. They appear to be precluding you from using the Internet.

Holding the power button gets me to a screen that gives me two options. Macintosh Disk or options. If I choose the former it just feels like it’s booted up normally (not in safe mode).

Using Safe Mode:

You're likely not using an Intel-Based Mac. See the link I included in my reply: How to Use safe Mode on your Mac - Apple Support
