You may need to use an app password. If you were already using one, then it may have expired (something that typically happens after installations and updates). Go Here: Create and Manage Third-Party App Passwords - AOL Help

You said IMAC in your post. That is a desktop Macintosh computer. You also mentioned your MacBook Pro. That suggested you have two computers that are handling email differently.
I presume, now, that you meant IMAP, not iMac. IMAP is an email protocol. You should check the IMAP settings required by AOL and make sure they are set correctly in Mac Mail or whatever email app you are using on your MacBook Pro.

For Starters….
Update and Use the Correct Protocols:
Mac's Mail App is not as modern as iOS's Mail app, Many eMail providers now require a separate App Password different from your eMail password…
Then you may need Ways to securely access AOL Mail…

First, tell us what version of macOS is on each Mac. And what email app are you using?
Then, check your account settings for your AOL email account on both the MacBook and the iMac. The iMac's settings for AOL email should match what you have on the MacBook (assuming, that is, that AOL email is functioning properly on your MacBook).
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
Sys Prefs>Network>highlight the Interface you're using>Advanced>TCP/IP>Configure IPv4: Using DHCP.
If using Wifi, instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
System Preferences>Network>choose interface>Advanced>Proxies Tab, make sure none are set, like for HTTP & HTTPS.
System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...
8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4
1.1.1.1
9.9.9.9
Apply.
Thank you very much for your help.
Much appreciated.
As you can probably realise I am not computer literate.
I have a Genius Bar appointment today, thank goodness.
Maybe they can sort 'me' out or teach me a thing or two!!

You are most welcome.
Reply back with the results and the fix. Doing so will help many, for certain.
So I spent an hour plus with someone at the Genius Bar, Apple, Brompton Road, London. Eventually I think an ethernet lead was attached to my computer and the AOL IMAP joined up fine.
I left thinking all was OK, but it was not and once home I still have the same problem. AOL mail will not join up with the IMAP server and if it does it is just for a minute or two and does not stay connected. The SMTP server joins immediately and stays joined.
A PC computer with Windows joins the IMAP perfectly, it is just the MacBook Pro and all the Apple devices I have.
3 iPads, 2 mobiles.
If anyone knows more than the guy in the Genius Bar what the fix is for this, I would be extremely grateful to know so I can pass the info on to another Genius Bar person who will no doubt be extremely grateful too!!
Thank you anybody and everybody.
Sync AOL Mail on a third-party app!!!

Thank you so much for trying to help - I do not know what any of this means but I will copy it for my next Genius Bar appointment. By the way I am in the UK ... not a Verizon net user.
I have taken off my email and reinstated it!!!!
SMTP-465-SSLIMAP Incoming mail server (IMAP): imap.aol.com
Mucking around with this is beyond me ... very unfortunately.
I thank you though.
So I am back. Sorry. Still not sorted out!! IMAP stays connected intermittently. Sometimes for 10 minutes or so, sometimes for a second or so. Assume this means my IMAP settings are fine. I have had my router changed, if that had anything to do with it. Today I go to an Apple Genius Bar for the second time. They do not seem to know what to do though. The last time they used a ethernet cable, all joined up ok and they sent me packing, but by the time I was home, the same problem occurred.
Does anyone have any ideas on this please. What setting on my computer needs to be changed. IMAP stays connected for another person using my computer with another name and looking into settings, his and mine are exactly the same. Gmail stays perfectly connected too but after many years I do not want to change my email address. I could use mail.aol.com but it is a rubbish layout compared to the user friendly Apple log on to AOL.
Apologies for asking again, and a HUGE thanks.
Apologies but what is an iMac?
I have a MacBook Pro with Ventura 13.2.1
An iPad Pro 11inch with iPad OS version 16.3.1
and an iPad Pro 12.9 inch again with 16.3.1
I assume that is the BIG desk computer!! Sorry to be so ignorant.
I also have an Apple phone.
Thank you all for trying to help.
Off to Genius Bar with all my Devices.
Bet they can't wait for me to arrive!!!!
I bought an ethernet cable!!!!
Everything works and stays connected with it plugged in.
Not the answer though.
Thank you everyone again.
Amazing you tried to help.
A rare breed these days.
