Numbers graphs

when I create graphs using numbers, I get either a transparent graph where the background file entries show through the graph making it hard to see axis numbers and labels; OR it is not transparent and the background file is covered by the graph and I can see the graph clearly with no confusion from the file entries behind it....how do I choose that flat white non-transparent background instead of the see-thru version..??

thanks...

Hi _DataGuy_,

With the graph selected, Format Panel > Graph > Background & Border Style > Colour Fill.

Choose white from one of the colour pickers

When you create graphs in Numbers, why do you place them on top of/in front of a data table?

Generally graphs/charts are placed in an otherwise empty part of the document, where there is no need to use any type of block to prevent text from showing behind the graph.

If it is really necessary to place the graph on top of the table, you can make a three layer sandwich to hide the table.

Set up the table and the graph in the position you want them.

Select the Table, then use the Arrange menu to Move (it) to the Back.

Use the Shapes menu to add a Shape (the square seems best for this case) to the page. Drag the handles (small white squares at the corners and centre of the sides, top and bottom of the shape) to resize and reshape the square to a rectangle large enough to completely cover the table.

Drag the shape onto the table, move it to where it covers all of the table.

If you haven't yet done so, change the fill colour of the shape to white.

Select the chart (Graph) and use the Arrange menu to bring it to the front.

Drag the chart to where you want it—in front of the table and the white 'tablecloth'.

Disadvantage (which might be an advantage, depending on your needs and purpose):

The Table will now be inaccessible until you move both the 'tablecloth' and the chart away from it, or move the 'tablecloth and chart behind it (or move the Table to the front).

To move the table to the front:

Place the pointer in an unoccupied space near the chart. Click to check that the space is empty. If the click produces a set of handles, you have selected something—probably the 'tablecloth'. Move the pointer to a location outside the frame of handles, and click again to deselect. Repeat if necessary.

When you click on a space and nothing is selected, press and hold the mouse button and drag the point toward the tablecloth and table.

Handles for the tablecloth, then for the table will appear. When both those sets are visible, but the chart is still Not selected, release the mouse button and move the pointer to a place where it is on the tablecloth, but NOT on the table. Press and hold the command key, then click on the tablecloth to deselect it, leaving the table selected.

Use the arrange menu to move the table to the front, make any changes you need, then, with the table selected, move it again to the back, using the Arrange menu.

Regards,

Barry
