I Misread your Original Post:

Seeing your reply, I'm no longer seeing it as if you want to backup your Mac for later viewing (which is what Archive is). (and for note: No. The Mail all is not going to be moved, because the Archive is in the Mail portal.

So, Reinstall the Mail App:

If Mail is acting up suspiciously, then re-install the Mail app.

1. Go to: App Store
2. Tap: Search
3. Type: "Apple mail”
4. Select: the very first app shown: the default iOS/iPadOS mail app.
5. Tap: the cloud icon to download and install it.
