Texting a sound no longer works like before

I used to be able to hold down the iMessage microphone icon and record a spontaneous and funny sound that I could send. Recently the iMessage microphone will only type words but does not record sounds. It used to be so easy. Now there are more steps involved. Really disappointed with the change.

iPhone 11, iOS 16

Hi Sweetbearies,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.

It sounds like you're having an issue with sending audio messages.

We're happy to assist.

We recommend checking out the steps in the section titled "Send an audio message" from the article here: Send and receive photos, videos, and audio messages on iPod touch

1. In a conversation, touch and hold the Record Audio button to record an audio message.
2. Tap the Play Message button to listen to your message before you send it.
3. Tap the Send Audio button to send the message or the Delete Audio Recording button to cancel.

Note: To save space, iPod touch automatically deletes audio messages two minutes after you listen to them, unless you tap Keep. To always keep audio messages, go to Settings  > Messages > Expire (below Audio Messages), then tap Never.

We recommend the steps above because they directly address the issue you initially posted about: you're having difficulty sending an audio message on your iPhone.

Please let us know the outcome after giving the above steps a try.

Cheers!
