Battery degradation on MBA M1 2020

Hi all,

I have this MBA M1 2020 for 6 months (September 2022) and this is my first macbook ever. I tried my best to prevent the battery degradation by reading other's experience and watch some videos about the cycles, max and min charging, and other stuff. At first, I charge when it's on 20-ish% to 80% at maximum manually, sometimes I missed by charging it over 80% (90ish% at max, rarely 100%). I also kept the optimized battery charging feature on.

After 2 months of use, I noticed the battery's health was degrading to 99% (on the 20th-ish cycle). I thought that was normal since the battery will degrade after all. Some times later, the battery's health kept degrade untill I decided to install AlDente and coconutBattery last month to prevent overcharge and monitor my battery performance in real time. I set the maximum charge to 79% and never drain it below 20%.

I'm aware that coconutBattery percentage is different from macbook's system percentage (read other users review). In the beginning, the coconutBattery shows the battery's health is on 89.1% and the system is 95%. As of now, my battery's health is 87.9% on coconutBattery and 93% on macbook's system, only after 8 cycles. To keep in mind, my usage is completely normal, I only use this laptop to do light task. No video editing, games, coding, etc.

Here's the screenshot:

I tried to compare it as well (using coconutBattery features):

My questions are:

  1. Is my battery's health degradation considered rapid or is it normal?
  2. If it isn't, any other tips that can prevent from nosedive?
  3. If the battery's health keep degrading to below 80%, will the battery drain rapidly while in the use?

Thanks!

Rechargeable batteries can lose some initial charge quickly and the last for a long time at that level before losing capacity, some will hold initial capacity for a long time and then start to lose capacity, some will start slowly losing capacity from day one, and any other possible combinations one can think of.  It is just the nature of rechargeable batteries.

FWIW, don't try to micromanage your battery and just use the Mac.  If you reach a point in time where the working time on battery is not long enough to meet your needs, then start to worry or just get the battery replaced.

If you still truly believe that this is an issue, contact Apple Directly ( https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201232 ) or set up a Genius Bar appointment at the nearest Apple Store or at the nearest Apple Authorized Service Provider and have the Mac evaluated.

As an aside, I have an M1 MacBook Air that dropped to 91% capacity in six months and has been sitting at that capacity over a year.
