because it says, and I quote, "If you purchased your item from Apple in the U.S., you can take it to any U.S. Apple Store for an exchange. Item exchanges are, of course, subject to in-store product availability." it does not mention any time span but can you really ? Can someone who tried please tell me ?

If you return a product within 14 days, you get a refund or credit on the product. If you want to use the refund or credit toward the separate purchase of another product, that is up to you.
Call it what you want, but Apple is not going to simply hand you another iPhone in exchange for yours without going through the full process.

No on exchanges. You will have to go the refund route, then buy another phone.
However you want to interpret the language, the limit is 14 days.
Hello ~ You have 14 days. You can trade it in or sell it and apply the funds to a new iPhone in the color you choose. I would recommend a case in the color of your choice.
