Lost Remote Access to Mac Mini from MacBook Pro

I have a mac mini with an external hard drive that I used to be able to log into from my macbook pro to perform Chronosync backups. A couple of days back I lost the ability to log in remotely.

The mac mini can see the hard drive and everything is fine there.

When I use the finder on the macbook pro I can see the mac mini. When I click on it and try to connect, it fails with the following error message

Nothing has changed other than a recent Ventura update to 13.2.1. Wifi is on for both. Remote login, file sharing, etc. are all enabled in Sharing. I just can no longer connect.

Would appreciate any ideas as I am stumped.

Thanks, Mark

Hi marks1214,

Let's check to see if any of the advanced file sharing options could be preventing a connection:

"Set advanced file sharing options

Use advanced file sharing options to set the protocol and other options for each shared file.

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Settings, click General  in the sidebar, then click Sharing on the right. (You may need to scroll down.)
  2. Turn on File Sharing, then click the Info button  on the right.
  3. Control-click the name of the shared folder, then choose Advanced Options.
  4. Select advanced options:
    • Allow guest users.
    • Only allow SMB encrypted connections.
    • Share as a Time Machine backup destination.

5. Click OK, then click Done."

Set up file sharing on Mac

If the issue is still present after checking those settings, contacting Apple Support is the best path forward to resolve this issue. They will be best equipped to investigate this further for you:

Hey there marks1214,

We understand you're no longer able to login to your Mac mini from your MacBook Pro. We'd be happy to help you troubleshoot this.

Make sure you're following these steps to remote in: Allow a remote computer to access your Mac

Log in to your Mac from another computer
1. On the other computer, open the Terminal app  (if it’s a Mac) or an SSH client.
2. Type the ssh command, then press Return.
3. The basic ssh command format is:
4. ssh username@hostname
5. The hostname can be an IP address or a domain name. For example, if your user name is steve, and your computer’s IP address is 10.1.2.3, enter the following:
6. ssh steve@10.1.2.3
7. Enter your password, then press Return.

Find the SSH command to use to log in to your Mac from another computer
1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Settings, click General  in the sidebar, then click Sharing on the right. (You may need to scroll down.)
2. Click the Info button  next to Remote Login.
3. Note the SSH command shown below the “Remote Login: On” indicator.

Kind regards.

Hi alma1090

Thanks for responding. I tried what you suggested, but no luck.

I verified again that remote access is on with full disk access for the mac mini. This is what is so weird, nothing has changed in the past year or two with this functionality.

I collected the appropriate IP address for my mac mini, and went through your "Log in to your Mac from another computer" (my MacBook pro) suggestion using ssh, but it didn't seem to get me back.

I still cannot connect to the mac mini hard drive from my MacBook pro like I have always been able to do. I can see the mac mini in the MacBook pro finder, but I cannot connect to it.

I am open to any other suggestions.

Thanks again, Mark
