After losing all my contacts yesterday, I reloaded them by hand..... When I was all finished, my gmail acct had 3 addresses less than my iphone, but the cloud had over 25 LESS contacts, I only had 3 on the cloud. How do I get the cloud to start working again?

Housing your contacts in exactly one place sounds like it will improve your situation. Your original post suggests you used two accounts to house contacts - gmail and iCloud. It suggests you housed some contacts in one account and others in the other account. Stopping this will be good.
I do have the two, but have had them since I got the iPhone14. It has worked fine until this weekend. I get my Gmail on my iphone as well. But Sat or Sun I tried to use my iphone ctx and they were gone. I went to Gmail and they were gone. I went to the cloud and they were gone, except 3 which were my emergency contacts, on both the iphone and gmail.
I worked with apple support last night and after an hour or so I gave up , said thanks and shut down. This am everything was the same, only the three. I typed in all of my contacts into the iphone contacts and they are there. I saved them to my PC as a CSV file and a CSV Card for future and have given up on that cloud crap altogether. Thanks for you input, it was an eventful afternoon. :-)
I did contact apple support, and the tech wandered here and there telling me to check this and that and the other, and after about an hour of fruitless attempts, I gave up. I did not delete them, I just wanted to call a friend and all my contacts were gone. The are also gone from the cloud! Apple support also couldn't help me with that one either. I re-entered all my contacts on the phone by hand, (finger I should say!) and they still do not appear on the cloud. I am trying to create a csv file of my contacts to save them on my PC and forget about the loud.
Has anyone else lost ALL of their contacts with this update? Mine were all gone yesterday, except three emergency contact numbers.
