Bluetooth fails to pair and/or connect iPhone with MacBook

My 13" M1 2020 MacBook Pro does not pair or connect to my iPhone 13 Pro Max. Popup says "not supported." All recommendations from Apple have been tried with no success. Other Bluetooth devices connect with both the Mac and the iPhone. Both devices appear on the respective lists, but there is no "connect" button.

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.15

Bluetooth pairing an iPhone and a Mac is not supported.

See the information in: Bluetooth: Why can't I pair my iPhone or … - Apple Community

If you are attempting to use Handoff/Continuity or AirDrop, that does involve Bluetooth but the devices are NOT paired; Bluetooth just needs to be on and the devices in range of each other. The following may help with Handoff/Continuity issues: Use Continuity to connect your Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch - Apple Support
