I'm unable to update the software past macOS Catalina. The programs I use are not able to run properly now without the macOS upgrade. I'm hoping to not have to buy a new Mac and was wondering if instead there was another way to upgrade my iMac?
When you are going to install an app, you can check the vendor's web site to see what versions they have available for download. Look for a specific download that is for Catalina. Some sites will have what you want.

What apps are you particularly concerned about?
It is not permitted here to help with any effort to upgrade an unsupported Mac. That leaves no option other than to acquire a new/refurbished/used replacement.
