I have received a message from someone requesting me to become his Account Recovery Contact. In “Password & Security” section of his Apple ID it says that request has been sent to me (which I have received as a message; not email) but I have not accepted it.
How do I ‘accept’ the request?
will replying to his text message and saying ‘I accept the request’ solve the problem?

I had to seek advice from an Apple advisor. Apparently the main culprit was that both my friend and I had devices listed in settings/Apple ID that were too old and no longer supported by Apple (we both had iPad2 listed). Once we removed those from settings the problem was solved. Unlike before, now in the notification message of request to be Account Recovery Contact that I received I was given a choice to accept or decline.

How to become an account recovery contact
To become an account recovery contact, a friend or family member first has to invite you. When they send the invitation, you see a notification in the Messages app on your device. If you're part of their Family Sharing group, you're added as their recovery contact automatically. If not, you'll be asked to accept or decline this request.
Thank you Limnos. I have received a notification from him in messages app but there is no facility to accept or decline it. I have replied to notification message saying that I accept his request and he has received my reply but on his device it still says that I have not accepted his request. I hope this has made the situation clear.
Basically I am looking for a facility to register my acceptance or refusal with Apple.
