I just recently purchased my first Mac Laptop - the MacBook Pro and would like to know the official Apple position on whether to keep my MacBook Pro plugged in or not... whether to shut it down at night or not. I would like to preserve the health of the battery as much as possible.
There is a lot of conflicting information available.

This is as official a word as Apple has ever published: About battery health management in Mac notebooks - Apple Support Nothing is actually said about keeping your MBP plugged in or not.
I have worked with many laptops over many years. People get too excited about the question of whether or not to keep the unit plugged in or not. That may have been an issue long ago with NiMH batteries but with modern Li-ion batteries and the charging management capabilities of modern laptops, it's not anything to worry about.
As to whether or not to shut down your MBP at night, I am on the side of recommending that you do that ... but you will find that the new models never actually completely shut down.

We are not Apple, we are Apple users trying to help each other. In my opinion (I worked in IT) it is no problem to keep your Mac plugged in.
For shutting down: I only do that when I am not going to use it for a long time. Otherwise I only close the lid
