There were literally hundreds of different model Macs produced over the past several decades. Getting to Step 1 requires identifying it. If you don't know where to begin: is it a desktop? A portable? Does it have a CRT, or a flat screen monitor? What color is it? That will help narrow down the list of possibilities.

If it has a built-in Superdrive, I assume the pawn shop did not include the two grey DVDs that must accompany those models from cradle to grave. Not a show-stopper, but you are most likely going to need them. If the Superdrive is built-in but is "greyed out" perhaps it isn't working. Not a show-stopper either, but you might need to fix it or buy an external Superdrive.

Any Mac previously configured by someone else must be prepared by its seller prior to selling it according to What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your Mac - Apple Support. Again, not necessarily a show-stopper, but you need to resolve the above uncertainties first. Otherwise no one can even begin to help.

Lastly: Any Mac that is purchased second-hand should greet you with a language selection screen the first time you power it on. If that does not occur it is reason alone not to purchase it, or to return it for a refund.
