Cannot 'Slide to Unlock'

Cannot 'Slide to Unlock' once in a while when an incoming phone call comes in. Happens maybe once a week on my iphone 4 and happened about the same with my original iphone before that. I can't seem to recreate this problem in order to troubleshoot. I have to let the call go to voice mail and then it will open. Anyone else experience this?

100% agree with "calibration" issue. Has been almost couple weeks that i'm keeping in my pocket facing away from leg.... and the problems happens to me just 1 time....earlier it happened several times per day !!

I do not use gMail and have all the same applications as usual.

Never made restore in those last days, nor sync with iTunes

starting aug 10 (after reading 'grdh20' message and his suggestion to keep in pocket facing up) seems everything is going better for me....but obviously waiting for Apple definiteky fix

Hi Kelly,

No, my slide to unlock fails when I press the home button to expose the slide to unlock. Thats where it fails on mine. I have had it fail on a few attempts to answer a call but nothing like it does trying to access my home page of apps.

This calibration thing makes zero sense to me and here's why. Gmail. I can force my slide to unlock issue by simply installing or unistalling gmail, and Gmail is a very new email for me. I just made the switch a few months back maybe.

I have had every iPhone from day one and kept every iPhone in my back pocket (not when sitting down of course) facing my butt. Not one single iPhone has had a slide to unlock issue.

What I did think it was at first was a software update glitch after installing 4.3.3 from 4.2.1 but now realizing when I did update was about the same time I switched to Gmail.

Hi everyone,

I have had this issue with my old 3GS, and now with my quite new iPhone 4 (white). The old 3GS was always in my pocket facing the leg. But this problem only happened occasionally. Same with the iPhone 4, and I can confirm it even happens when lying on my desk. Here is what works for me: I checked with my carrier (T-Mobile Germany) how to extend the time before an incoming gets diverted to the mailbox to a maximum value of 30 seconds. When the slider is "freezing", I silence the ringer by pressing the power button once, and I press the home button. After some time, the slider re-reacts to my fingers, and I can answer the call. So locking is annoying, but not really a problem.

Hope that helps until Apple comes up with a solution.

P.S.: I have seven mail accounts set up, and a Gmail account is among them...

Well... I had this problem on my 3Gs and iphone 4; cannot remember if I had it on 3G or 2G.

I was really annoyed by it; and still am. 2 weeks ago I decided it is time to go with temptation and jailbreak my iphone 4... and I did.

the problem was more obvious now; and more recurrent... but after feddling around in the core services and system... I found a solution for me.

the screen now is more responsive and I do not get the annoying irresponsive touch screen when I get a call.

it had to do with dynamic registeration under extensions under AppleMultitouchSPI.kext (plugins)

somehow when I changed it from no to yes... everything went great.

This is only my finding, it does not by any way represent a solution or states that it will work for you.

So, I took it to the apple store and they gave me a new phone. Thank you Apple! I brought it home and reloaded my apps. the apple genius loaded the contacts for me in the store. The next morning the phone rings at my desk. I look down and of course, its facing down. I pick it up and guess what? I cannot slide the lock!. Another call goes to vmail. F-it! Im now working hard at breaking the habit of putting it face down. I dont care what the problem is, but Apple needs to fix this Sh*t. Why do I need to consciously think about how the **** I place my phone on something. Its just as bad as "dont hold the phone that way". Its making me think hard about an alternative.

Hi Kelly,

2 weeks ago I took my 4th defective iPhone 4 to the genius bar here and they were simply at a loss as to why me and so many others have come in to their store with this issue. They offered to replace it again...with another refurbished/service phone. I denied the offer because I felt at the time that maybe...just maybe it was the service phones that were having the issue.

I left the store, called Apple's corporate number in Cupertino and the receptionist connected me to a person who placed an order and sent me a brand new phone. I took the phone in the sealed box to the Apple store with my Macbook Pro and said "here you go, you set it up". They did, it failed in front of them. They did a DFU?? and full restore on another computer of theirs....it failed.

Slide to unlock failures are a BIG problem that I believe ALL iPhones suffer from however I think many users might think they just didn't swipe their finger correctly and try again..and again until it opens.

Another "new" problem I've just encountered is in composing texts. If I go to contacts>Text Message> the contacts name does not appear in the To: line OR If I pick a contact to text it brings up the previous person I texted. This is really bad!!!

So in closing, the iPhone 5 best blow my mind with innovation and reliability.

Add another victim to the list, I tried the Dynamic registration edit, but I still have the issue. but I also can not use the E, S, and Z keys, when typing. Sometimes toggling the mute switch, helps me. This is not a usual problem, I sometimes get a few weeks break from this problem, but then it comes back for a few days. Don't want to take it in, until a untethered is released for IOS 5.

Glad to see I'm not crazy. My problem is a bit different than the ones I've read here. When my iPhone 4 (os 5.0.1) is in my pocket, screen touching something, it works just fine. But if I leave it out of my pocket for 15-20 minutes, the slide to unlock will not work when I go back to it. I either have to fight with it for a minute or so or I have to put it in my pocket (or have the screen touching my body) for a few minutes, then it will work just fine. Same for calls. If its in my pocket I can slide it with no issue but if it's been out of my pocket for a little while, it won't work and I have to call them back when it finally decides to unlock. Screen works fine once its unlocked, never had any other issue.

I've tried the resets, reinstalled the os and apps with no change. Seems to do it no matter what.

Apple needs to get with the program on this one.

I removed all apps, did a restore on the phone, removed the protection film, Changed the glass and it continues to happen. It is the Texas instrument touch screen controller chip on the logic board on mine. No way to reset it that I have found, other than changing the logic board. All of the suggestions work temporarily but eventually it comes back. Also with IOS 5 Emoji is now preinstalled. but i removed it when it was on 4.3.3 and eventually the issue returned. occasionally I would heat the glass up to relieve the issue but be careful if you heat it too much your lcd will blow.

The fact that so many people have this issue and get a replacement with thesame issue should open apple's eyes to a defect in the touch controller chip, but until they get a class action, this problem will remain something they rather keep under the rug.
