My Airpods won't work properly

I recently purchased first gen airpods. My issue is when I charge them. When I plug the case (with the airpods) in, it only charges the airpods themself. Even when my pods are outside of the case, or are fully charged, the case simply won't go up in battery percentage. I've tried reconnecting them to my phone, restarting them, and using different cables to charge. How do I fix this?
