Can Find My show my friend’s location when the phone was turned off?

A friend and I follow each other on Find My. She struggles with addiction and wants me to be able to track her. When I woke up this morning and turned on Find My her location dot briefly showed up across town, date stamped at 11:23 pm, and then zipped back to her house. Does that mean she went somewhere at that time, turned off her phone or put it in Airplane mode, and then turned it back on again when she got home?

Switched Off? Still traceable: Even if the iPhone is switched off it is findable, see the pic below.

iPhone is findable even when powered off. (iOS 15 and above)

Did you enable Find My network? See the pic below

If yes, read below how it may get located.

The Find My network is an encrypted, anonymous network of hundreds of millions of Apple devices that can help you locate your device.

From the above, I infer that when another device comes in close proximity to your powered-off device the GPS from both devices will form a network and your device's location info will be displayed to you on your device only. As long as both devices are/have...

  • Find My Network is enabled
  • iPhone 11, 12, 13, 14, and above
  • With iOS 15 and above versions

Set up Find My on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac

Thanks for these quick attempts to help me understand how Find My works. I am not getting the answer I’m seeking so I think I may have worded my question poorly.

I clicked on Find My this morning around 6 am. Her location dot showed up at a different location, about a mile away. The time was stamped at 11:23 pm. Then the dot quickly zipped back to her home before my eyes.

So, I’m wondering if she was somewhere else at 11:23 pm. Maybe she turned off her phone or put it on Airplane mode? But then she got home and turned it back on?

Or, is it possible that the cell tower pinged her at a different location a mile away at 11:23 pm, but she didn’t actually leave, but it stamped that time, and then when I turned on Find My it zipped her dot back?

I’m asking because, as a result of her addiction, she will tell blatant lies and gaslight to hide the fact that she went and got some stash in the middle of the night, or otherwise did something off to get high. I don’t want to say what I saw and make her feel accused unnecessarily - especially when she is in such a delicate state and it may impact her sobriety.
