Keep in mind that “bars” is a very inexact measure of signal strength. To compare you really need the actual signal strength in DBm, which you can get using field test mode (google it if you aren’t familiar)

Could be the carrier is NOW providing fewer 4g towers as they are replaced with 5g?

Very likely. Also, carriers are dropping their voice channel, and now all voice is over LTE (VoLTE)

Perhaps APN settings need updating?

You don’t have access to APN settings directly, but you can check for a carrier update to the APN settings - go to Settings/General/About and wait about 30 seconds; if there is an update you will be prompted to install it.

Are you sure the family member didn’t jailbreak the phone?

3 questions for you:

1. How could you install iOS 14 on your iPhone 6 (which cannot support iOS versions post 12.5.7, because of hardware limits)? (maybe your products list is not up to date)
2. When did you install iOS 14 on your iPhone?
3. Where did you download that version from?

Unless the Author updated his/her iPhone 6s when iOS 14 was available and signed by Apple and then did not update any further and then after having the issue for two years, decided to make this post today………..

Unlikely that it was an update that hundreds of millions of users installed; if it was, there would be thousands of posts about it, and it would be in all of the tech journal websites and Forbes (as they hate Apple).

You can’t update an iPhone 6S to iOS 14, either. The only upgrade option is iOS 15.
