iPhone 13 stolen, can I erase if battery goes flat?

Hi, my phone was stolen today. I’ve activated lost mode. “Find my” phone is on. We have been to the residence to find phone but no answer. Waiting for police to go over. I want to erase my phone, but, I probably should wait till police go to the location. My question is….. If the battery goes flat, can I still erase my phone?

thanks

Yes and no. Your iPhone will be erased immediately when it is turned on and connected to a network, either Wi-Fi or Mobile Data. So you can activate Erase from https://icloud.com/find - but it only happens when the phone is switched on.

Unless the battery is very worn, it shouldn't be a problem for your iPhone to hold power for 7-8 hours if it has 70% power left. If the phone is locked, it cannot be used, and thus the battery consumption is also quite limited.
