Someone set up my AirPod Pros with their own Apple ID

I still have the box it came in when I bought it, with both serial numbers matching. I can’t connect my Airpods with my Apple ID. Yet it says whoever this person is can see my location (my home). This makes me very uneasy. Is there a way to fix this, especially with my proof of purchase?

The AirPods are locked to a previous owner's Apple ID. This could indicate the pods were purchased then returned for a refund after the original buyer paired to their iPhone, but never cleared when returning. In other words your supposedly new AirPods are really pre-owned. If you don't know the original owner this may be impossible to clear the lock. This is more likely to happen with some of the third party resellers, and relatively unlikely when buying direct from Apple.

The best advice is to reject the AirPods and return to the seller for a full refund (or exchange to genuinely factory-new AirPods). If it was my choice I would be returning to any third party reseller, and buying replacements direct from Apple, either online or in a physical Apple Store.

Hello Tillman15,

We'll be happy to see how we can help out today in Apple Support Communities.

It sounds like when trying to pair the AirPods Pro to your device, they are showing they already belong to another Apple ID.

When you see the message for location can be seen, the person who paired the AirPods has Find My turned on their Apple device, and would be able to view their approximate location as long as they are assigned with their Apple ID. See if this link provides you with help.

If you still need help, and are concerned about Find My, you can reach out to Apple Support.

Take care!
