Magic Keyboard Touch ID not working consistently

I have a new Magic Keyboard with Touch ID. Paired with my MacBook Air just fine, and the Touch ID was initially working.

After a couple of days, Touch ID on the keyboard stopped working. Following a computer restart, it will work for a few minutes, and then stop working again.

I've been through regular restarts, restart in Safe Mode and restart to go through Apple Diagnostics (which found no issues). I added another fingerprint. Same behavior every time: Touch ID will work for login to 1 or 2 websites, and then stop working. Touch ID on MacBook Air has worked fine the whole time.

Any ideas? Thanks.

I've a 2023 14" macbook pro, of today Feb 24 2024, it's fully software-updated with sonoma 14.3.1 and the finger print sensor has been AWFUL and crippled. I took out my finger print, cleaned off the keyboard, which wasn't dirty as I keep it clean, and my fingers are clean, not wet, etc. It took FOREVER to load a new fingerprint and it's still not working, or I would say BARELY! I have not downloaded any software but judging that there's MANY of us having this same exact issue, it's gotta be Apple / Apple software, or maybe a hardware problem where the finger sensor dies? I'm kind of new with Apple products and they're NOT cheap! and this IS leaving a VERY sour taste in my mouth.

I'm on my 2nd magic numerical keyboard with Touch ID for my 3 month old iMac with M3 chip and continue to have this problem. I spent $2k on my new iMac 24 inch and shouldn't be dealing with this. It's unacceptable and I'll see what Apple has to say now when I call to complain for the 2nd time. This is Apple issue and not user issue ..I keep everything clean etc. they need to provide me with some compensation for my time and not having what I paid for. I've been a dedicated Apple user of iPhones,iPads AirPods, HomePods etc for many years and this is ridiculous as I said before!

I gave up long time on mini keyboard touch id then i tried again with Ventura 13.6.7 and worked for a week then now is very hard to make it work before was just resting my finger on the sensor now i have to press hard and sometimes it dosent work at all its very temperamental its weird shouldn't be temperamental either working or not ! i believe the touchid security also work with apple servers by sending kind of security encrypted key sent to their servers not only locally in our computers that's why is temperamental ! for exemple my ipad air touchid never worked and now started to work all time without updating the os ??

Not sure if this will help anyone else, but in addition to the keyboard, I have also have a Logitech mouse (MX Anywhere 3) which I had installed before I bought the keyboard.

After months of issues with the keyboard, I decided to disconnect the mouse and "forget" the bluetooth connection, likewise the keyboard.

Then I paired the magic keyboard and the mouse in that sequence. Absolutely no problems since.

So if you are having problems and also have the Logitech mouse, give that a try
