Magic Keyboard Touch ID not working consistently

I have a new Magic Keyboard with Touch ID. Paired with my MacBook Air just fine, and the Touch ID was initially working.

After a couple of days, Touch ID on the keyboard stopped working. Following a computer restart, it will work for a few minutes, and then stop working again.

I've been through regular restarts, restart in Safe Mode and restart to go through Apple Diagnostics (which found no issues). I added another fingerprint. Same behavior every time: Touch ID will work for login to 1 or 2 websites, and then stop working. Touch ID on MacBook Air has worked fine the whole time.

Any ideas? Thanks.

I've a 2023 14" macbook pro, of today Feb 24 2024, it's fully software-updated with sonoma 14.3.1 and the finger print sensor has been AWFUL and crippled. I took out my finger print, cleaned off the keyboard, which wasn't dirty as I keep it clean, and my fingers are clean, not wet, etc. It took FOREVER to load a new fingerprint and it's still not working, or I would say BARELY! I have not downloaded any software but judging that there's MANY of us having this same exact issue, it's gotta be Apple / Apple software, or maybe a hardware problem where the finger sensor dies? I'm kind of new with Apple products and they're NOT cheap! and this IS leaving a VERY sour taste in my mouth.

I've given up on my keyboard, will try to replace it during the next few days as it's still under warranty.

Just for an update, is the new full size keyboard still working with touch id?

Also, day three of my new keyboard, no problems to report with Ventura.

And Swervb, still working unplugged with Sonoma?

Day three of unplugged but successful touch ID operations... Something must be different in Sonoma... better different.

That didn't work.... needed to restart with cable... then again without... after logging in wirelessly is seemed to work. BTW for those curious, after adding the keyboard back on cable i got the message saying I'm all set to Touch ID... and when disconnecting the cable...i got the message saying I'm able to use touch ID wirelesslessly. but it seems until the restart cycle with after plugged in... and after start wirelessly with typed password it continues to work wirelessley.

I'll report tomorrow and again for the next few days.

Same here, also noticed the Connecting again.

Before I was using a Touch ID keyboard on Studio M1 Max without problems but with some mechanical issues so went in to exchange it. While waiting for the replacement I started using a similar spare keyboard with Touch ID as well, which is the 1.48 version. It has all the issues described above and I also noted the Connecting text few times, something the previous version (which was for sure a different type nr. although not sure which version) never had.

So I am concluding the 1.48 has issues of its own.

After I get the replacement I will see what that is and does and report back.

I can confirm I'm also facing same issue. Running Ventura 13.5 Mac mini M1 and also Macbook Pro M1 Max running Ventura 13.5 (I'm working on separate keyboard since sometimes I have the lid closed and and using external monitors).

As a workaround I'm switching off the keyboard with that little toggle at the back of kyb and then switch on to bring back touchID functionality, but that only helps for literally couple minutes. Then it just loses touchID functionality again. It is a stone in a shoe Apple.

So I finally traded my keyboard for a new one and it has been working flawlessly for the last two days.

I just lock the computer, let it go to sleep and when I use it the next day I can unlock it with touch id, everything working as it should.

I'll post here if it stops working, but I would advise anyone who's having the same issue to try to return it and get a new one.

Received a replacement for the keyboard with faulty SPACE bar. It is the same 1.4.8 firmware as my spare keyboard that had the Touch ID issue described here. So may not be related to 1.4.8 as this new keyboard is working without issues since 2 days.

faulty keyboard sent for 'repair' so will have to wait and see what happens with that one and what I get back.

Gah I wish it were easy to report this issue and have Apple listen. My experience working in big tech for several years is that unless somebody internally pushes for fixes, it's virtually impossible to get bugs reported to the right people. All you'll get are unhelpful canned responses from vendor support folks.

That said, I have this problem too. Magic Keyboard is about two weeks old, touch id worked well for a few days, and then stopped working. It takes either disconnecting and reconnecting bluetooth, or connecting the keyboard with the chord and restarting... it's so annoying. It doesn't sound like getting the keyboard replaced fixes the problem forever, so maybe the new OS release will help?

After Sonoma update on Mini M2 pro, I got the same problem, no Touch Id (TId). At first the options for TId was greyed out. Decided to delete the fingerprint profile and to my horror, the entire TId function disappeared! Reboots and Safe Mode did not restore TId at all. Still in Safe Mode, decided to forget the Magic Keyboard device and paired it as a new device. It worked. The TId menu came back and working! Hope this help some of the cases here.

Same here, it's been working consistently for the last 3-4 days for me. Funnily, I'm still expecting the replacement that Apple support had ordered for me to fix the issue (which apparently wasn't going to, if firmware was the issue). The layout is a different language than English and it's taking weeks. If the current keyboard keeps working, then I might have to reach out and halt the replacement.
