Magic Keyboard Touch ID not working consistently

I have a new Magic Keyboard with Touch ID. Paired with my MacBook Air just fine, and the Touch ID was initially working.

After a couple of days, Touch ID on the keyboard stopped working. Following a computer restart, it will work for a few minutes, and then stop working again.

I've been through regular restarts, restart in Safe Mode and restart to go through Apple Diagnostics (which found no issues). I added another fingerprint. Same behavior every time: Touch ID will work for login to 1 or 2 websites, and then stop working. Touch ID on MacBook Air has worked fine the whole time.

Any ideas? Thanks.

I’ve been trying to get to the bottom of this for a month since buying a used “like new” Magic Keyboard online. Initially thought I had a defective board, so I bought a new and sealed replacement keyboard at Micro Center. Problem persisted.

It’s true that if you leave it plugged into the Mac or a wall adapter, Touch ID will keep working. If the keyboard isn’t plugged into power, Touch ID will stop working eventually. Comes back on with cycling keyboard power.

There’s other forums mentioning this issue so maybe Apple can get this fixed.

I can confirm I'm also facing same issue. Running Ventura 13.5 Mac mini M1 and also Macbook Pro M1 Max running Ventura 13.5 (I'm working on separate keyboard since sometimes I have the lid closed and and using external monitors).

As a workaround I'm switching off the keyboard with that little toggle at the back of kyb and then switch on to bring back touchID functionality, but that only helps for literally couple minutes. Then it just loses touchID functionality again. It is a stone in a shoe Apple.

Gah I wish it were easy to report this issue and have Apple listen. My experience working in big tech for several years is that unless somebody internally pushes for fixes, it's virtually impossible to get bugs reported to the right people. All you'll get are unhelpful canned responses from vendor support folks.

That said, I have this problem too. Magic Keyboard is about two weeks old, touch id worked well for a few days, and then stopped working. It takes either disconnecting and reconnecting bluetooth, or connecting the keyboard with the chord and restarting... it's so annoying. It doesn't sound like getting the keyboard replaced fixes the problem forever, so maybe the new OS release will help?

I have the exact same issue and often see the "connected" keyboard icon that you mention. Just like everyone else it "resets" itself once plugged in but soon after being unplugged it will revert back to not working properly and it has been driving me up the wall. I am using the 75% version of the Keyboard also.

I only use the keyboard for the conviniece that it offers!

I have both and M1 Pro MBP and a brand new M2 Max Studio and the same issue is present on both devices.

I may attempt to install Somona on my MBP and see if that fixes the issue.

The theory that this can be related to MacOS Ventura makes sense, but there are contradicting reports.

Danickzh, you said yesterday that you downgraded to Big Sur and it worked:

I downgraded os version it works, so more like software issue.

But in May you posted this:

i tried on Big Sur, the same. It must be the keyboard then.

Just to clarify, are you using the keyboard with Big Sur right now? Is it working?

What Jsd72 posted is also interesting: full size Magic Keyboard works fine but the smaller version without numeric keypad has this issue.

Are we all using the "mini" magic keyboard? Is anyone using the full size version and having this problem?
