Magic Keyboard Touch ID not working consistently

I have a new Magic Keyboard with Touch ID. Paired with my MacBook Air just fine, and the Touch ID was initially working.

After a couple of days, Touch ID on the keyboard stopped working. Following a computer restart, it will work for a few minutes, and then stop working again.

I've been through regular restarts, restart in Safe Mode and restart to go through Apple Diagnostics (which found no issues). I added another fingerprint. Same behavior every time: Touch ID will work for login to 1 or 2 websites, and then stop working. Touch ID on MacBook Air has worked fine the whole time.

Any ideas? Thanks.

I’ve been trying to get to the bottom of this for a month since buying a used “like new” Magic Keyboard online. Initially thought I had a defective board, so I bought a new and sealed replacement keyboard at Micro Center. Problem persisted.

It’s true that if you leave it plugged into the Mac or a wall adapter, Touch ID will keep working. If the keyboard isn’t plugged into power, Touch ID will stop working eventually. Comes back on with cycling keyboard power.

There’s other forums mentioning this issue so maybe Apple can get this fixed.

There goes my mini vs full size theory :/

Different computers, different keyboards, apparently the only thing we all have in common is that we're using macOS Ventura.

so I unplugged mine last night. Still worked this morning. I’ll report back tomorrow.

Let's see what Swervb reports in the next few days. Having to wait for the next OS is awful and just incredible, but it's better than nothing.

Same here, also noticed the Connecting again.

Before I was using a Touch ID keyboard on Studio M1 Max without problems but with some mechanical issues so went in to exchange it. While waiting for the replacement I started using a similar spare keyboard with Touch ID as well, which is the 1.48 version. It has all the issues described above and I also noted the Connecting text few times, something the previous version (which was for sure a different type nr. although not sure which version) never had.

So I am concluding the 1.48 has issues of its own.

After I get the replacement I will see what that is and does and report back.

I called Apple Support again. Tried safe mode, tried creating a new user, tried unpairing the keyboard and deleting all fingerprints and then connecting with the cable again, nothing works. After letting the computer sleep for 10 minutes, touch id stops working on wake up.

Support said this isn't a usual problem, the expert I talked to said he had the exact same keyboard at home without any issues, so I'm trying to determine exactly why this is happening to so many of us.

Truth is this can't be happening to every person who buys a Magic Keyboard, this can't be normal behaviour.

I've noticed that from time to time, when I'm reading something on my screen, or watching a video, a message with the keyboard icon that says "connected" appears. Does this happen to anyone else? It rarely happens, but I've seen it 3 or 4 times.

I'll post here my Mac model, the OS version, when the keyboard was bought and maybe something more you guys can think of. Maybe we can gather some useful information, like if our keyboards are all from the same year or date, or if this only happens with certain Mac models.

Magic Keyboard (small version without numeric keypad), Portuguese layout, bought on January 2022

so I unplugged mine last night. Still worked this morning. I’ll report back tomorrow. I’m on the second Sonoma dev release … it never worked right for me in Ventura and needed to be plugged in all the time.

For newer folks here I have a mini Touch ID kb which was replaced twice, Amazon inventory, mbp m2max, docked primarily successfully using Microsoft tb4 dock that recently came out so to its 2.5g nic, dual 4k’s usbc everything.

I picked up a new (full size numeric) keyboard from Apple this morning to test the mini vs full size theory.

Since the problem has now been reported with the full size board, I can at least test if the new board (#3) shows improvement over the original mini (#1) and the mini replacement (#2) to confirm that some boards are bad while others are working normally (So maybe hardware related?). Overnight sleep and a few days of usage should be enough. Will report back in 24-hours.
