Touch ID on Mac mini M2 Pro with Ventura 13.2.1

Here is my issue, Touch ID works fine if I keep my Magic Keyboard connected to my Mac via a cable. If I unplug the cable Touch ID keeps working for about an hour and then stops working. Keyboard is fully charged and ID sensor is clean. Safe mode, switching keyboard off and back on, rebooting Mac, etc., does nothing to solve the issue. This is EXTREMELY frustrating to say the least. Is this problem perhaps being caused by a bug in the latest Ventura release? Is there anyone else in the community having the same or similar experience? I can't seem to find a definitive solution anywhere for this issue.

Hi

I opened a case with Apple: to cut it short, it seems its a hardware issue, they asked me to bring it to an Apple Service Provider\Apple Store for further investigation.

In details:

  1. The 1st advisor went with all questions via Chat, and at the end, s\he recommended to schedule a call with an advisor..
  2. The 2nd advisor were pretty helpful, he checked the logs, and asked me create a new partition with a new MacOS on it -without even setting the profile-, in order to see if the problem still exist, and collect fresh logs from untouched version of the OS, which I did and found the problem still exist, he confirmed that it is not Keyboard issue, either a software or hardware issue.
  3. Since MacOS takes time to be installed, I had a 3rd advisor checking the logs, which, according to her, had been shared with a senior advisor, who at the end says it seems a hardware issue, and recommended to take for further investigation by an Authorized Service Provider.

Now, from where I live, I don't know how long will it take to get it replaced, and whether will I keep the device until I get the replacement or not.

Hi JF

You are telling my story, my mini is 2 weeks old, shipped with 13.2.1 and followed all the suggestion by any source including Apple, I upgraded lately to 13.3 and problem still persist.

I didn't face the problem if I kept my KB connected via cable, though it happened with me once (Touch ID didn't work even the cable is connected), I will give it a try today.

That narrow the chances, since I heard no user complaining using other product lines (iMac - MacBook Pro), most probably it is not the KB problem; it is Mac mini problem, either hardware or OS bug related to Mac mini.

Hello everyone,

I worked with an Apple advisor today on the phone regarding the Touch ID issue. We went through all the suggestions that we all have tried to solve this problem. He told me that we need to gather some information (Data Logs) from my Mac and upload them to him. He stepped me through the process and the logs were uploaded, he is now going to submit the logs to the engineering department for analysis. In a day or two he is going to email me to setup a time to discuss the findings. I will keep you all posted.

I've had the same issue and spent literally hours on the phone with Apple Support. I went through the same process to generate logs which they sent to their engineers. My last call(s) were Thursday evening and I initially thought that the proposed solutions from the engineers were not working. However, something they had me do (or some other unknown update pushed out by Apple) does seem to have fixed the problem and the Touch ID has now been working without stopping for over two days. If others are still having the problem, I can detail the steps I went through with Apple Support (as best I remember them) to see if there was something in there that actually fixed this.

Thank you for your response and suggestions. My router/gateway is about 4' away from my keyboard and about 2' from my Mac. My Mac is connected to the gateway via an Ethernet cable. However, we're talking bluetooth here not Wi-Fi. Are you suggesting that perhaps my gateway could be interfering with my bluetooth connectivity? My Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse have never lost their connection to my Mac. You mentioned that I could possibly have a defective keyboard, what is the possibility that my Mac could be defective?

My thoughts exactly, either an OS or keyboard issue or perhaps both. Just out of curiosity how is your Mac mini configured? Mine is as followed:

Mac-mini M2 Pro

10 core CPU / 16 core GPU

16 GB memory

1 TB SSD

10 GB Ethernet

Magic Keyboard with numeric keypad, Touch ID

Magic Mouse

Just a thought, perhaps the issue may be caused by a particular Mac configuration. I may be grasping at straws but maybe the more information we gather the likelihood we come up with a solution might increase. At any rate I will continue to try to figure this problem out, if I do I will let you and the rest of the Apple community know. Please do the same if you find a fix. Thanks!

Also I might add, there have been numerous complaints regarding Wi-Fi and Bluetooth issues with the M1 series of Mac-minis. I thought that issue was addressed with the M2 series, perhaps not. However, I have not experienced any connectivity issues thus far except with Touch ID .
