Touch ID on Mac mini M2 Pro with Ventura 13.2.1

Here is my issue, Touch ID works fine if I keep my Magic Keyboard connected to my Mac via a cable. If I unplug the cable Touch ID keeps working for about an hour and then stops working. Keyboard is fully charged and ID sensor is clean. Safe mode, switching keyboard off and back on, rebooting Mac, etc., does nothing to solve the issue. This is EXTREMELY frustrating to say the least. Is this problem perhaps being caused by a bug in the latest Ventura release? Is there anyone else in the community having the same or similar experience? I can't seem to find a definitive solution anywhere for this issue.

Mac mini, macOS 13.2

Hi

I opened a case with Apple: to cut it short, it seems its a hardware issue, they asked me to bring it to an Apple Service Provider\Apple Store for further investigation.

In details:

  1. The 1st advisor went with all questions via Chat, and at the end, s\he recommended to schedule a call with an advisor..
  2. The 2nd advisor were pretty helpful, he checked the logs, and asked me create a new partition with a new MacOS on it -without even setting the profile-, in order to see if the problem still exist, and collect fresh logs from untouched version of the OS, which I did and found the problem still exist, he confirmed that it is not Keyboard issue, either a software or hardware issue.
  3. Since MacOS takes time to be installed, I had a 3rd advisor checking the logs, which, according to her, had been shared with a senior advisor, who at the end says it seems a hardware issue, and recommended to take for further investigation by an Authorized Service Provider.

Now, from where I live, I don't know how long will it take to get it replaced, and whether will I keep the device until I get the replacement or not.

arose,

Thank you for your quick and detailed post! I have tried most of the things you mentioned in your post except for creating a "Test User" account. I also have a VPN installed, however I did not install the VPN until about 2 weeks after I received my Mac mini. The keyboard issue has been present since day 1, so I don't believe the VPN is the issue. Also if I keep my keyboard connected via cable to my mini the Touch ID works flawlessly all the time. Another thing to mention is, if I switch my keyboard off and back on again Touch ID still does not work, the only way I can get it working again is to shut down and restart my mini, then as usual Touch ID works again for about an hour or so. With all that said, I am going to try the test user account suggestion. I will let everyone know if this solves the issue. Is your Touch ID still working presently? Thanks again.

So based on what you said, it should be a hardware problem.

we saw some people here in this topic that changed their keyboard and they said still have the problem, so please let us know if it works fine for more days. i hope your's works fine.

sadly if the problem will come from hardware, i can't change mine because of sanctions. i've changed mine once from local store which still has the problem but they wouldn't accept to change my keyboard anymore :((((

I'm sorry to hear your issue with a return. I don't want to speculate (but will do so anyway), and wonder if the updated bluetooth spec in the new M2 Mini has some compatibility issue with the bluetooth in existing keyboards that has since been addressed with keyboards being produced more recently. This might explain why some keyboards could work well with other Macs but not the new M2 Mini. It could also explain why an exchange with a keyboard that was produced earlier might still have the issue but the problem is fixed when exchanged with a keyboard produced more recently. But then again, this is just speculation...
