Apple News Top Stories no longer included

I have a Mac book Pro running Big Sur and as of a few days ago Apple News opens without Top Stories. I have updated Big Sur but am not willing to update to Ventura. I’ve cleared history, identity and turned off cloud sharing, rebooted everything to no avail. Then checked my husband’s laptop, also Big Sur and his Apple News also opens without Top Stories. Any suggestions?

MacBook Pro 16″, macOS 11.7

Hi Yghu7,

According to the article Read the latest headlines with Apple News:

"Today

Today is your feed of top stories curated by Apple News editors, and stories from the channels and topics that you follow, like sports and local news. Your feed also shows you stories suggested by Siri and trending stories that are popular with other readers. As you read, Apple News learns your interests, then suggests stories that you might like.

You can read some Apple News stories for free in the Today feed. To access premium content, you need a subscription."

On a Mac, you can configure what appears in the Today section. Per Change preferences in News on Mac:

"Restrict stories in Today

Show only stories from channels you follow in the Today and other feeds.

This option limits the variety of stories that appear in feeds; you won’t see Top Stories and Trending Stories."

Check to see if that function has been enabled which could restrict what displays in the Today category.

Regards.

I've seen this as well on some of our organization's Macs. In fact on one Mac or iPad the Top Stories was there, but later the same day or the next day it was gone. I first noticed this a week or two ago. I don't have a subscription and I did check the app settings. The only thing I have not tried is to delete the News .plist preference file. It is weird, but seems par for the course for Apple these days.

Try deleting the News .plist preference file which should be in the hidden Library folder of your home user folder. Within the Finder Option-click on the "Go" menu and the hidden Library option should appear. Select "Library" and navigate to Preferences to see whether there is a com.apple.news.plist file or something similar. If there is no file there, then check in the "Application Support". I see there is even a "News" folder within the hidden Library folder as well. I don't see a plain "com.apple.news.plist" file on my Mac although I see some "newsd" named files....no idea what app or setting they are for though.
