2010 iMac now rendered useless

I have a mid 2010 iMac 27" which has served me brilliantly since I bought it. Upgraded the RAM...installed a 4tb HDD and it's been faultless. Can't get it updated past El Capitan for whatever but I wasn't overly bothered as my MacBook also serves me.

Today I changed my Apple ID password and when I went into the iMac it now tells me I have an outdated IOS that is no longer supported and therefore I can't update my System preferences to allow mail etc to be shown on my Mac. Any suggestions or has IOS 13 rendered my Mac useless?

Yahoo App password…

Generate and manage third-party app passwords

Some older, third-party email apps (that do not use our Yahoo branded sign in page) require you to enter a single password for login credentials. To access your Yahoo Mail account on these apps, you'll need to generate and use an app password. An app password is a long, randomly generated code that gives a non-Yahoo app permission to access your Yahoo account. You’ll only need to provide this code once to sign in to your third-party email app.

Thanks for the response...I've now got High Sierra loaded. However it still doesn't resolve my 'Apple Mail' (my @me.com account). I'm guessing that there is absolutely no way to get up to IOS 13 of any description on this machine? That is such a shame as like I said, it is in great condition and out performs some newer systems that I have had the misfortune to use.

So…I have a 2015 MacBook Pro running OS 13.3, updated yesterday and then updated my password. Everything works and functions EXACTLY as I expect. I have an iPad Pro JUST updated to latest iOS 16.4…again everything works as expected. Before I changed my password the iMac was working fine then it asked me to update my system preferences and in particular my Apple ID password…THATS when it started. It’s basically telling me I cannot update my password unless I update the iMac to at least 13.3?

I’m not a novice with Macs I’ve owned them (and most other Apple Products) since the iPhone was released but this has me flummoxed and I’m wondering do I go back to a simpler password combination to see if that resolved it? Atm my password is 15 characters…surely that should be an issue?

Good morning from here in the sunny UK...

So this morning using my MacBook I have changed passwords to a lesser character set (temporarily I might add) and also turned off Keychain...still no go on my iMac.

Opening System Preferences and going into iCloud I can input my Apple ID but as soon as I put in ANY password it throws back the following...

'CANNOT USE YOUR APPLE ID ON THIS DEVICE

Your Apple ID can only be used on devices with iOS 16.2 or later or macOS 13.1 or later. Your account requires the latest OS version and cannot be used to sign in to this device'

For me the frustration is that upgrading to High Sierra has now rendered the iMac sort of useless if you can't access any of the stuff requiring a sign in. Sure I can get Ito Safari and still use internet etc and any of my other stuff is accessible but not being able to receive stuff...a shame! I might try and do a clear out and reload back to EL Capitan and see what happens as it was fine at that point but it looks like my 13year old 'baby' is about to be retired :(

An update...I went ALL around the houses looking for reasons WHY I had lost access and tried the 'browser' option to which it initially allowed me to sign in and then advised me that as I had 'Web data access' turned off I would need to authorise this.

It then locked my email out and wouldn't allow me anywhere near iCloud afterwards!

Back on my MacBook I remembered the other day I was playing with some settings and had turned on 'Advanced Data Protection' which in turn appears to have turned OFF 'Access iCloud Data on the Web'

I've now reset the 2 options and hey presto...I'm back in on my iMac. Lets now reset the password and see what happens.

Good job I'm wfh today huh?
