Mail opens blank windows

Sometimes takes a few minutes to read the email. Choosing "new screen" from file menu does nothing. Has been buggy for months -- some days works fine, other days it takes forever. Have tried changing fonts - does nothing/ Have rebuilt mailboxes -- does nothing. Starting and restarting does nothing.

Help!

Runninng Monterey on early 2015 iMac 27, Mail is Version 16.0 (3696.120.41.1.3)
