Emails Disappeared from iCloud Inbox

Sunday I had about a thousand e-mails in my inbox, going back years.

Monday my inbox had about 50 e-mails, none of them older than a day.

The missing e-mails aren't on iCloud or any of my devices.

What happened? Is there any way to get them back? And does this ever happen with Gmail?
