Message filter is not working, I can't filter or find previously received mails....not by name or attachment or date

Thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities.


First, make sure you are following the search guidelines for Mail in the Mac User Guide here: Search for emails in Mail on Mac - Apple Support. The link will take you to the steps for macOS Ventura, which has different search parameters than earlier macOS versions. If you're not using macOS Ventura, you can click the drop-down menu in the upper left corner of the page to select the macOS version you are using.


If you have confirmed the steps you are taking, and search criteria you are entering, are correct per those guidelines, we would suggest the following steps to help further isolate and troubleshoot your issue:


  1. Quit the Mail app: Quit apps on Mac - Apple Support then restart your Mac: Shut down or restart your Mac - Apple Support. Once back on, open the Mail app while holding shift on your keyboard.
  2. See if the issue continues in safe mode: How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support
  3. See if you can replicate the issue in a new user: Add a user or group on Mac - Apple Support


Don't hesitate to respond back if the issue continues.
