iCloud email Junk filter does not work!

For several months now, starting sometime in December or January, I have been receiving 10-50 Junk emails each day that show up in my inbox. I right-click and move them to Junk folder in the hopes that the Junk filter will learn to move them, and being careful to NOT open the message. I reviewed all the Apple support articles that pertain to Junk mail filter. As a last resort, I reset the Junk filter about 2 months ago with no changes in the Junk filter behavior.

I have contacted Apple support. The first time, the suggestion was to block the senders. I tried this and it does stop some of the mail from going to my inbox, for a time. However, the blocked messages end up in my Trash folder and are shown as 'Read'. A large number (1--50) still appear in my inbox each day.

My second contact with Apple support is still open. I have a scheduled call back later this week (Wednesday, March 8, 2023). They have collected data/files from my Mac and are looking into why the filter is not working.

Other notes:

  1. It is happening on only one of my four iCloud email addresses. This is the address I have used for ecommerce and is obviously the one that has been picked up on the internet.
  2. All the Junk mails have similar characteristics including graphics and obvious misspellings, although the messages are broad spectrum and the subjects include sex, computer virus protection, CBD Gummies, toenail fungus, shipment pending notices, credit card offers, etc. All are from unknown "companies".
  3. My wife's email is also getting these Junk mails, but her Junk filter is moving them in the Junk folder. She has only had occasional junk in her inbox, about 1-3 per month.
  4. This shows up on all my devices, which include iPhone, iPad, iMac, and MacBook Air. All devices are up-to-date with latest versions of iOS and MacOS. It also appears on my iCloud account.
  5. It also shows up on my iCloud account - it is obviously something happening with Mail at the server level.
  6. I rules set up on my iCloud account to sort my incoming email. My wife does not use rules to sort her email. One of the support calls with Apple looked at my rules and confirmed that there were no issues about my use of rules.

The latest Apple callback was scheduled for March 21 at 8am. They did not call back. However, I have been on the phone with them 3 times since my first post here (March 6, 2023). Up until March 21, they always made the scheduled call back.

Based on one of the support calls, I made one change in the Mail settings on my iMac. The change I made was to uncheck the "Filter junk mail before applying my rules" checkbox in Mail Settings on my iMac. Here is what it looks like:

This box was checked when the problem began several months ago. I had checked it because I had set up rules for my mail messages on my iCloud account, so that my mail would be sorted identically on all my devices. So immediately after the 'uncheck', junk mail began filtering directly into the Junk folder! I then removed all the blocked sender addresses from the earlier attempts. Junk mail began to show up again, but it was mostly filtered into the Junk folder. A few did enter my inbox which I moved to Junk.

Another side issue is the different settings that are presented to the user on each device. Specifically, iOS and MacOS devices do not have the same junk mail settings.

Note that it does not make sense that this check box would have this effect. The Apple representative agreed with me and told me he would provide all my input back to the engineering team. And the callback scheduled for March 21 never came.

The problem is back! Here is a table that shows the numbers of junk mails received and where they appeared in my mail folders:

Note that today, so far, none of the junk mail was filtered to the junk folder. They were all delivered between 1-10 am.

There is clearly some problem happening with the junk mail filter on the Apple mail server(s). I was unable to reach any conclusion, or obtain a solution, from Apple as of this morning. I would encourage anyone with this same issue to indicate here on this thread, and to call Apple support.

There was no easy way to identify that this was a device independent problem, so it is posted on the iCloud forum.

tygb, I appreciate the time you took to help, but it looks like you may not have read our posts through to the end. I have already implemented these suggestions, and the links you posted are referring to "junk mail filtering not working on a Mac." The problem isn't that junk mail isn't filtering on the Mac. It isn't filtering in iCloud period. Today, after doing alllllll of the suggestions made above, (repairing the disk, resetting junk filtering, updating my computer), I had every. single. e-mail I received go directly to my inbox. Even all of the mail I had been flagging as junk.

Please, if anyone has any update (besides sending a link to a standard Apple solution), I'd love to see and implement it. This is driving me crazy.

Also, can someone explain why "Mark as junk mail, but leave it in my inbox" should be checked?? This doesn't make any sense. I don't WANT junk mail in my inbox - I want it in the JUNK mailbox

The original question actually appeared on the iPad users community discussion, I believe. The screenshots in Mail preferences is basically to illustrate that measures are in place to help iCloud identify Junk Mail (in other words, we have performed the actions needed to flag Junk Mail as "Junk").

This morning, I received 10 e-mail messages, all junk mail, and all went directly to my inbox. These were all items I previously flagged as "Junk Mail." As I stated before, I have "Advanced" preference selected and now should only receive into my inbox messages from my contacts and ONLY my contacts. These e-mail preferences were selected after working with Apple support advisors who looked at my computer. It isn't a Mac problem or a Mail App problem.

Here is the latest tally of where junk mail ends up in my account. There was a lull in the mail right after my last post, but it is now back again in force over the last two days. Of note is that some/many of the junk mails are being filtered to the junk folder, but still getting a large amount into my inbox. The columns indicate the number of junk mails ending up in my inbox folder, the junk folder, and the total.

Of particular note was that that one of the emails received in my inbox yesterday was an attempt to spoof Apple:

I forwarded this message to: reportphishing@apple.com

I believe that all of these junk emails are coming from the same source, and they are using a wide variety of content to attempt to get people to click on the links.

From March 29 through April 1, 46 out of 51 junk emails came with a note: "This message has no content."

I am still collecting data. Let us know how it goes when you call on Monday.

Interesting that you have some periods where junk mail filtering works. I have not had this luck at all. This morning, I had 12 e-mails in my mailbox. All but 2 of them were messages I have flagged as "junk" many times, some from blocked addresses.

Incidentally, I just performed an update on my computer (received the notification this morning). I will see how junk mail filtering works after this update, though I'm not sure it will help. I have already done an update within the last month, and the update didn't affect mail filtering at all.

As I've mentioned many times, I do believe this is a problem with an iCloud server somewhere.

I called apple and spoke with a supervisor. They did a screen sharing call, looking over my settings and rules. They took photos on my computer, then did screen sharing on my phone. They said they were looking for any conflicting settings. They scheduled a call back to me on Thursday.

On the phone, they suggested all the things that were recommended in prior calls: resetting the junk mail filter; updating my computer; removing rules. I gave them my previous case number. I'm getting a sense that it is assumed this is still a problem on my end.

Am I missing something? Could it be something that is going wrong with my computer/phone/account? I have done all the things suggested online and by the support staff. As far as Mail goes, the last few weeks have been super frustrating and I'd love to get this resolved.

Update: I received a call back last Thursday. Unfortunately they called my home phone, which I don't answer, so I missed the call with the supervisor. When I called back, the Apple representative requested to do a data analysis on my phone. Looks like that was started and completed on the same day, April 13th. I haven't heard anything since Thursday, and I am STILL receiving every e-mail into my inbox - even items I have marked as Junk at least close to 80-100 times by now.

I will let you know if I hear back. If I don't hear anything by next week Monday, and I'm still having trouble, I plan to call back yet again.

The Junk filter appears to be working, in my account, for now. My Junk folder has 219 emails as of today, dated May 8 through today, May 29. They all have the same characteristics described above, but only a handful have been deposited into my my inbox over this time period. 54 of those junk emails were sent yesterday, May 28, and 100% of them were automatically filtered into my Junk folder.

I am hopeful that whatever changes were made that affect my account are also benefiting everyone else's accounts.
