iCloud email Junk filter does not work!

For several months now, starting sometime in December or January, I have been receiving 10-50 Junk emails each day that show up in my inbox. I right-click and move them to Junk folder in the hopes that the Junk filter will learn to move them, and being careful to NOT open the message. I reviewed all the Apple support articles that pertain to Junk mail filter. As a last resort, I reset the Junk filter about 2 months ago with no changes in the Junk filter behavior.

I have contacted Apple support. The first time, the suggestion was to block the senders. I tried this and it does stop some of the mail from going to my inbox, for a time. However, the blocked messages end up in my Trash folder and are shown as 'Read'. A large number (1--50) still appear in my inbox each day.

My second contact with Apple support is still open. I have a scheduled call back later this week (Wednesday, March 8, 2023). They have collected data/files from my Mac and are looking into why the filter is not working.

Other notes:

  1. It is happening on only one of my four iCloud email addresses. This is the address I have used for ecommerce and is obviously the one that has been picked up on the internet.
  2. All the Junk mails have similar characteristics including graphics and obvious misspellings, although the messages are broad spectrum and the subjects include sex, computer virus protection, CBD Gummies, toenail fungus, shipment pending notices, credit card offers, etc. All are from unknown "companies".
  3. My wife's email is also getting these Junk mails, but her Junk filter is moving them in the Junk folder. She has only had occasional junk in her inbox, about 1-3 per month.
  4. This shows up on all my devices, which include iPhone, iPad, iMac, and MacBook Air. All devices are up-to-date with latest versions of iOS and MacOS. It also appears on my iCloud account.
  5. It also shows up on my iCloud account - it is obviously something happening with Mail at the server level.
  6. I rules set up on my iCloud account to sort my incoming email. My wife does not use rules to sort her email. One of the support calls with Apple looked at my rules and confirmed that there were no issues about my use of rules.

The latest Apple callback was scheduled for March 21 at 8am. They did not call back. However, I have been on the phone with them 3 times since my first post here (March 6, 2023). Up until March 21, they always made the scheduled call back.

Based on one of the support calls, I made one change in the Mail settings on my iMac. The change I made was to uncheck the "Filter junk mail before applying my rules" checkbox in Mail Settings on my iMac. Here is what it looks like:

This box was checked when the problem began several months ago. I had checked it because I had set up rules for my mail messages on my iCloud account, so that my mail would be sorted identically on all my devices. So immediately after the 'uncheck', junk mail began filtering directly into the Junk folder! I then removed all the blocked sender addresses from the earlier attempts. Junk mail began to show up again, but it was mostly filtered into the Junk folder. A few did enter my inbox which I moved to Junk.

Another side issue is the different settings that are presented to the user on each device. Specifically, iOS and MacOS devices do not have the same junk mail settings.

Note that it does not make sense that this check box would have this effect. The Apple representative agreed with me and told me he would provide all my input back to the engineering team. And the callback scheduled for March 21 never came.

The problem is back! Here is a table that shows the numbers of junk mails received and where they appeared in my mail folders:

Note that today, so far, none of the junk mail was filtered to the junk folder. They were all delivered between 1-10 am.

There is clearly some problem happening with the junk mail filter on the Apple mail server(s). I was unable to reach any conclusion, or obtain a solution, from Apple as of this morning. I would encourage anyone with this same issue to indicate here on this thread, and to call Apple support.

There was no easy way to identify that this was a device independent problem, so it is posted on the iCloud forum.

THIS. This was it. Thank you.

Like everyone else here, I had suddenly found all of my spam suddenly, persistently staying in my inbox — or (more often) in a folder where I send all of the email from the .mac account I use to order things online.

Turns out I had added a rule on the iCloud.com mail client to mirror what I'd had my Apple Mail desktop doing for over a decade: shunting semi-spam out of my inbox.

As soon as I deleted that rule on the webmail site, voilà. All good. Spam filters working properly once more. Hallelujah.

Again, thank you.

Here is my latest UPDATE:

My junk mail filtering has not resolved. I had a lengthy conversation with another specialist who was very kind, but didn't really have a "solution" other than creating rules for every junk e-mail I receive. This process of creating rules is done directly on iCloud from a web browser (so, sign in to iCloud from Safari, if that's what you're using). Right now, I'm up to 47 rules. I'm still receiving e-mails from some really annoying source, where there are random letters and numbers contained within the source e-mail, so it's virtually impossible for me to prevent receiving them.

I would say this workaround is "helpful," but again, not a solution. The junk mail filtering should work as soon as I label something as "junk."

Interestingly enough, when I was on the phone with the specialist, she had me mark a message from her as "junk," and that worked. However, junk mail from other sources don't seem to work that way, and I'm not sure why. Something is still not working on the iCloud end of things, but if you have extra time in your day to create lots of rules, then this is the solution for you.

This is not a solution and not helpful. It places extra work on you to create a rule that should be done by the junk filter. It just doesn't make sense, and is a failure of Apple support to address the root cause of the problem, which is, and always has been, the junk filter efficacy, or lack thereof, that is occurring at the mail server(s).

This "solution" is not unlike me being told to "block" the senders of the junk messages that were in my inbox. That ended up just moving them to Trash, but did not enable the Junk filter to learn to stop them.

I think it would take less time, with the same result, to just block the sender of the junk mails that appear in your inbox. However, as I said, neither bandaid addresses the root cause of the problem.

My most recent experience appears to be that the junk mail sent to me has declined dramatically. Again, starting April 16, my junk mail has been a maximum of 2 received each day, with many days of zero. I have no idea what changed, but if it stays this way, I'll be happy. Here is the raw data:

The chart that I posted earlier shows the disposition of only Junk emails that were showing up in either my inbox or the Junk folder. The numbers indicate the lack of effective junk mail filtering. None of my legitimate emails are counted in the numbers.

The rules on my iCloud Mail account are sorting on senders to place emails in separate folders. This allows me to have my mail sort available on all my devices, iPhone, iPad, and MacBook Air, as well as on my iMac. These rules have have no bearing on filtering Junk mails. This was confirmed during a live screen sharing session with Apple support where we reviewed all of the Mail settings for my iMac and iCloud. No changes were recommended by Apple.

I too, have read all the Apple Support articles, and as a last resort, performed a Reset. This had absolutely no effect on the Junk mail filter efficacy. I stated this in the first paragraph of my initial posting above:

As a last resort, I reset the Junk filter about 2 months ago with no changes in the Junk filter behavior.

No you are not missing something. I went through all the user settings in Mail, on my iMac, iPhone, iPad, and in the iCloud account. All my devices had the latest software updates installed. I did everything suggested by Apple support articles before I called them. The Apple support tech/supervisor did not suggest anything on my settings to be changed. I've had this problem since January at least.

I decided to put this on the support discussions because I assumed that others were having the same issue. You, and others, have confirmed that is true. On one of my support calls, I stated that the junk filtering had to be occurring at the (Apple) mail server(s), he agreed without hesitation. The search for device dependent problems is, in my opinion, a complete waste of time.

Yesterday, I received a total of 73 junk emails of which 42 went to my inbox. That's 42 open/clicks for each Junk message in my inbox. Multiple this by each day for the last three months and I agree that this is "super frustrating". And that doesn't count our time spent on support calls.

I have no data regarding the source of these emails, but I suspect that "they" have hacked a way to get through the Apple junk filters. One of the Apple reps told me he was experiencing something similar in his Gmail account, but had yet to have a problem in his iCloud email.

I'll wait to see what they say when they call you back.

I am having the same problem. I contacted Apple twice. The first time they referred me to a specialist who said my problem was interesting & they would be looking into it. The second call (yesterday) had me repairing my disk on startup (MacBook Pro Ventura), restarting my computer, performing an update, and resetting my junk mail filtering. All of this has resulted in no change.

I believe this is an iCloud problem. It doesn't matter which device I use, and it doesn't matter if I go directly to iCloud using a web browser. All of my e-mails, regardless of whether I flag them as junk, go into my inbox.

I'm not sure if this is relevant, but my primary e-mail address is a me.com account from "back in the day" (2008), when Apple had MobileMe. Since that time (2012 I believe?), Apple switched to iCloud, allowing users to keep the me.com, but also adding on mac.com and icloud.com mail addresses. Since my primary Apple ID currently reads as mac.com, but all of my e-mails go to me.com, perhaps the system isn't recognize that? It hasn't mattered in the past, however, maybe something has been changed on the server end to cause a problem.

Any ideas or suggestions would be welcome. Thank you, Bob, for bringing the discussion here. I appreciate it

The chart you posted is showing junk mail / inbox mails for every rule you have created , as every mail is not a junk mail , these mails are coming from different recipients from different mail addresses and from different senders , you are monitoring each mail and made a record of them.

The more refined ways is click on advanced rules and move to junk , you have to create each rule according to the conditions met .

In my original posting, I stated that the Apple representative, "... collected data/files from my Mac and are looking into why the filter is not working." I could have been better at explaining what this actually meant.

During one of the calls with Apple support, as I was screen sharing with the representative, I downloaded a file (provided by Apple from the rep during the call) that collected a bunch of data/files and system info directly from my iMac. Once this data 'package' was created, I uploaded it to Apple with the link he provided. The purpose of this was to send my data back to the Apple software/engineering team for analysis.

On a subsequent call, I was not given any information about fixing anything on my iMac. This is to explain why I am not going to honor your request to post my app/software information. I do not use any third party apps to manipulate emails. In addition, this problem occurs when my iMac is at sleep or shut down. It occurs when I access email with any of my other devices that are listed in my earlier post.

I have the exact same issue. It began about 3 weeks ago.

Up until that point, all junk mail was filtered into the junk mail folder. This included mail I marked as junk as well as mail ID'd as junk by Apple's junk mail filter.

As of now:

  1. None of the mail previously tagged as junk and automatically moved to junk mail is working.
  2. None of the mail I re-tag as junk and move to the junk folder have any effect on the next batch of mail.
    1. The junk mail filters will not move previously ID'd junk mail into the junk mail folder.

I have used Apple Mail since day 1. Never had this problem until about 3 weeks ago. This has to be an Apple created issue.

Apple Mail junk mail filters are broken.
