Just today I have started to see small pop up windows appearing telling me my iMac is at risk. Here are some screen shots. I have never had any additional virus protection so I assume that this is just a scam but it does use the Apple "settings" logo. Is there any way of stopping these popups and/or should I be worried.

Ah! I didn't realise that was a website. I have now deleted it. The pop ups were starting to appear more frequently so, hopefully they will now stop. Do I get notified if a website asks permission to send notifications because that website (whatever it was) certainly did not ask.

Yes, you do get a little box asking you if you want to give a website permission but, it's small and pretty easy to just blow past. I would recommend unchecking "Allow websites to ask permission to send notifications". I can't think of a single website I would want sending me notifications.

While I agree with the reply from Idris above ……. for the most part. Based on the many reports I have seen here on the forum, I recently checked my version of Safari for possible notifications, and while I had received no such popup messages, I had well over a dozen such sites listed in my Safari Notifications panel. I can state with 100% certainty that I have never allowed any site to send notifications. As to how that list became populated on my Mac, I do not know.

I don't know if it's possible for the websites to circumvent that, but it wouldn't surprise me if they could.
Please check Safari Settings and select the Website section, then scroll down to Notifications, as shown in the screenshot below. Delete all you haven't knowingly added. or all of them.

OK I've found it now using preferences. However, there are no websites shown as asking for notifications. See here:
I can't get to the page shown in your screenshot. If I click Safari, the settings button is greyed out.
Ah, OK, I neglected to mention I was using Mac OS Ventura, sorry about that. Click the Preferences, and follow the same steps from there.
There appears to be one entry there (at the top of the list), with no description. Have you tried highlighting that entry then select Remove?
