Guides on Apple Maps disappeared after iOS16.4 update

My created guides with saved locations on Apple Maps have disappeared after the update. My Home/Work favorites are still there. I do have maps backing up to icloud turned on. Anyone else have this issue?

Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud, and make sure that the toggle next to Maps is turned on. If it is turned off, turn it on and wait for a few minutes to see if your favorites and guides reappear. Check Apple ID: Ensure that you are signed in with the correct Apple ID on your iPhone…..On my settings the toggle button was set to on. So, what I did was >toggled the Maps off >then back on waited a minute then >launched the Apple Maps app and all My Guides reappeared. Hope this helps everyone out with this issue.

I saved them to Notes from my iPad and then found the following steps, which resolved my issue:

  1. Head over to Settings > your name > iCloud.
  2. Then turn off the toggle next to Maps.
  3. Now wait for a few minutes and re-enable the toggle.
  4. Now launch the Apple Maps app and check if your guides are back or not.

Whew! Now I’ll apply the 16.6 update.

I chatted with Apple support about this issue. Unless you have a backup stored, the data is gone.

Here was the conversation:

Me: Hello, all the guides I have created in Apple Maps are gone. I am connected to a network, have the 16.4.1 iOS update, and location is turned on for maps in Privacy settings. Please advise how I can get my guides back.

Apple: How long has this issue been occuring? And when did it first start?

Me: It happened after I installed the latest update, within the past month. I thought perhaps my phone wasn’t connected to the internet, so I restarted and forgot about it until today. After checking online forums, it looks like many people are having the same issue, but I haven’t been able to find a solution.

Apple: Does maps show as listed under your iCloud storage?

Me: Yes

Apple: Being that this is app data you would have to recover and restore your device from a backup to enable these settings again ok?

Me: Is there any other way to retrieve this data? I do not have iCloud backups on

Apple: No this would have been the only possible way to retrieve this data as it is stored in an App, ok?

My collection of places was precious to me. All gone after 16.1., no way to restore it. Unbelievable. Thanks, Apple. Ugh. Reply

Fixed on iOS16.6 (24/07/2023)

deleted guides are lost forever but new ones will not be removed after restarting your phone.

*Some locations (dropped pins) I had saved in a guide on iOS16.5.1 just before the update have jumped to the nearest building (30metres or so) since updating to 16.6. Yes the guides survived the update. My guides are locations on the ground I reference not buildings.

This worked for me ! Yesterday It disappeared on me and I was very confused, I thought it was a glitch today until I noticed I can’t see any of my saved guides nor my address + work !

go to settings click on your ID (name) find the iCloud if you can’t tap on the iCloud then go to the one that’s available which was the media and purchase for me I accepted to the terms and conditions and the rest of the tabs opened up . Once you have open the iCloud tab go to maps if it’s green undo it , then click it again wait a few minutes and go to the maps, refresh by sliding down and your guides should all be there !!

If the guides on maps have disappeared after updating to iOS 16.4, there are a few possible explanations:

  1. Location Services: Ensure that Location Services are enabled for the Maps app. To check this, go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services and ensure that the toggle switch for Maps is turned on.
  2. Network Connectivity: Check your network connectivity. The Guides feature on Maps requires an internet connection to function. Ensure that you have a stable and strong network connection.
  3. Software Update: Check if there is a software update available for your iPhone. If there is, install the latest update as it may contain a fix for this issue.

Apple erased all my guides around mars (+1500 adresses), I recreated new ones and they again disappeared with iOS 16.5 yesterday. Word of advice : do NOT update before you save all the addresses on another platform (maps?). Contacted french customer service; they mentioned that hundreds of people in France had been calling but they don’t have an answer and are apparently not trying to find one. As everyone here, pretty annoyed at how little effort they put into this.

I am fighting every update available on my iPhone as I have lost my guides numerous updates. Instead of figuring out the problem, apple makes a new update that wipes out my data. Sick of it.

How is iOS 16.6 working out for you? Myself, and many others who’ve experienced this issue have found that the Guides have remained after this iOS update, and have had no issues since.
