Preview - Missing recent places in the where drop down

This Morning I updated to OS 13.3. I file a lot of PDF using the Where drop down in Preview.

After this update, I noticed that the Recent Folders is missing, now it shows "Favorites" then right to "Other...". It used to have Recent Folders between the two. I can not figure out how to get them back.

Using the Where drop down used to save me a lot of time from copying then deleting the files from various servers/external drives or having to use Other... then navigate through the maze of filing structure.

The only place I can find a setting about recents in the System Settings, Finder, or Preview is in System Settings - Desktop & Dock - Menu Bar (this didn't do it), or Finder there is a checkbox for the sidebar (this didn't do it).

Help would be appreciated.

Thanks

-Marc

My mistake! Thanks for pointing out the Option-File combination.

So, we have access to Recent Folders, via Save As.

If I pull down the current file name and location (at the top-center of the Preview window) and choose Other, I get essentially the same chooser window as Save As, and Recent Folders is there.

I still think it would be more convenient for users if Preview's top-center pull-down included a section of Recent Folders.

Hello Marc,

I am facing the same issue.

Was in contact with technical support team from Apple and apparently this is something that happened after last update. Technician checked it on his computer (he has last update 13.3.1.) and there was no Recent places. He told me that will take it to the engineering team and lets hope Recent places will return with next update.

Give this a try: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE 1: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

NOTE 2: if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode. This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will insure a successful boot into Safe Mode.

This worked: Changed settings on Google Chrome -- clicked on 3 dots ---> Settings. In settings top left corner clicked on 3 bars to bring up menu on left side of screen. Look for "Downloads". In that section, turn on "Ask where to save each file before downloading" and clear "open select types of file"

Quit and restarted Chrome -- now it asks where to save vs opening file up, and it stays in the last place you saved file to.

Again. Not ideal. I did add one of the most used. But this suggestion will clog up the sidebar. The nice thing about the recents is when I work in one company for the day all those recent folders were handy then next day I may be working on another company and they have a separate set of folders. So the recents was usually on 5 items long and changed to the last five I was using. I loved that feature. If it was 7 or 10 items long it would have been perfect for me.

I contacted Apple support about this and, of course, I got a canned answer ("With updates on the device some features are removed and updated to function differently, You can leave feedback on our site about any feature you would like to see.") and a pointer to Product Feedback - Apple. I left feedback there, and I recommend others do the same. I doubt Apple pays much attention to comments in the Community forum, although I don't have much confidence in feedback system, either.

I just updated to 13.5 this morning and it's still not fixed. I really miss (NEED) this feature to be reinstated.

As stated, favorites gets unwieldy with the amount of folders I have to manage. The recents list was perfect, it would hold in memory the last 5 folders I was saving PDFs within Preview to, so as I'm working in one company's files it was quick and easy to move files to the appropriate places. As I switched to a new company, I only had to use "other..." once to find the appropriate new folder and it would hold it for use.

I've only been disappointed in Apple OS a few times since my IIGS (over 20 years) and this makes that list.

Like the original poster and several others, I use Preview many times a day, every day, working with files of an ever-changing subset of my clients. Loss of the "Recent Folders" list in file move/rename dialog box is incredibly frustrating and time consuming. I don't understand why Apple did away with this very useful feature. Obviously, the code to implement the feature already existed. The code did not obviously slow down the system or cause instability or reduce security. Apple must have incurred work to remove the feature. It makes no sense at all, at least to a business user like me, why Apple would spend money and time to remove the feature.
