Final Cut Pro hangs on Audio Unit validation.

After installing Ventura, Final Cut Pro is hanging on Audio Unit validation. Logic and Digital Performer both validated the AUs fine, so I know the AUs are not bad. It must be a FCP bug.

Is there a workaround until Apple fixes this bug?

I tried deleting the preferences. It didn't work.

FCP is primarily a video editor so I could imagine that there might be additional or different AU validation requirements than for a DAW.

Or, perhaps it's similar to a known issue that if the number of installed motion templates exceeds some threshold, FCP doesn't display them. Since you say that FCP fails on different AUs, maybe when the number of installed AUs gets into the thousands, FCP becomes unhappy. Without further trouble-shooting it's difficult to say.

Please report back your findings if the reinstall of FCP improves the situation.

If it doesn't, a couple things you can try:

Do as Luis suggested to try and determine if the problem is with a particular AU or the number of installed AUs.

Post an https://etrecheck.com report to see if there might be an underlying issue with your system. Give Etrecheck Full Disk Access in System Prefs and post the report in your reply using the Additional Text button below.

Please report your findings if the reinstall of FCP makes a difference. If it does, then it's possible that something else that's installed on your machine has damaged FCP (Chrome's keystone software, CleanMyMac, etc). An etrecheck report could help identify this.

The Audio Units all validated in Logic and Digital Performer, and I didn't have this issue until I upgraded to Ventura. So it is not a bad Audio Unit. It is the FCP helper app that is not working properly and crashing (see screenshot below.)

And FCP freezes on a different AU each time I try. So it is not an audio unit FCP doesn't "like" unless it doesn't like several.

I am a musician with hundreds of AUs so your suggestion is not a practical fix. And why should I need to remove perfectly good AUs because FCP fails to validate them? FCP (or its AU helper app) needs to be fixed.

I suppose I will have to try a fresh reinstall of FCP.

I moved all the AUs to the Trash (the only option to get them out of the Components folder) and put them back five at a time. Restarting FCP each time.

Three AUs seemed to be the ones causing the validation app in FCP to crash or hang. (Screenshot below.)

This doesn't really solve my problem, as I use Guitar Rig 6 frequently (I can live without the other two.) Having to delete it and reinstall it every time I want to use my DAWs or FCP is ridiculous. And it works fine in Logic and Digital Performer.

Frustrating.

Update.

I tried installing Guitar Rig 6 and opening FCP three more times. The third time FCP opened. It has opened two more times with Guitar Rig 6 installed. Fingers crossed, FCP will continue to open with the plugin installed. And I can get on with using the software I paid a lot of money for.

The UA validation app in FCP really needs an overhaul.

Your AU validation issue may not be a bug. Your AUs may work fine in various DAWs and audio applications, but for something to work in FCP, FCP has to be able to manage those AUs when combined with video (no small task). There is more leeway when working with audio-only than when trying to maintain fidelity when both audio and video are involved.

It isn't unreasonable to have separate machines devoted to music production and film-video post-production. Or, separate accounts on the same machine with different installations of things like audio plugins. And, experienced post-production pros tend to be very careful about HW and SW installed on a work system, including careful management of macOS and other SW updates/upgrades (no auto-updates and not touching a system while working on a project).

Another way to resolve this issue is to use something like Digital Rebellion's Plugin Manager (part of their Pro Maintenance Tools package).

Some post-production oriented audio plugins validate with FCP and still don't work well with recent versions of FCP (this is a different issue). And, yes, there still could possibly be an issue with FCP itself...

Your answer is sound reasoning. But I am not a professional video editor (nor am I in the small club of wealthy musicians), so having a separate Mac for video is not realistic for me at this time. Separate accounts might work, but I don't want that hassle. I am fairly new to FCP and it has been a bit of a trial to learn and use it. This just added to the frustration.

Another thing is, Guitar Rig 6 is a virtual instrument (guitar amps and effects) that has basically zero use in FCP. I also have a lot of virtual synths, drums, pianos, orchestra instruments, etc., that are pretty much useless in FCP. It would be nice if FCP could ignore (or not load) virtual instrument audio units.

I can see where separate Macs would be advantageous, if not ideal.

Anyway, I have FCP working, and it only cost the use of two AUs I rarely use. A workable tradeoff.

Thanks.

If you're new to FCP and not a video editor, then you can significantly flatten the learning curve by watching a two free tutorials that are the go-to recommendations here. They will save you from hours of head-scratching and frustration.
